Every great blog starts with a great idea, and you can't build a successful blog that will last without one. To make your blog stand out from the rest, you will need to offer something that no other site is currently offering, or you will need to do the same thing that an already popular site does but in a more impressive or valuable way.

If you are planning on starting a blog, the key to building and maintaining a blog that will capture and hold the interest and attention of the blogging community is finding a niche. It used to be said to just start a blog on a subject that you are good at, but that doesn't necessarily hold true in todays blogging world, especially if you are planning on earning an income from your blog. The reason being, most blogs are about broad generic subjects and they have pretty much saturated the internet, making it very difficult to get any blog exposure.

To find a niche that will be able to compete, you must do some extensive research. One place you can do your research is Yahoo Answers. Go see what questions people are asking the most and in what niche they are in.Try to look for a niche that is unique, or different to what everyone else is blogging about. Maybe you will dig up a goldmine!

Next you will need to monetize your blog. Some good ways to do this is with affiliate products, AdSense, eBay auction, and Amazon. There are many more options that are also available.

Blog Success - Your Blog's Focus

In order to have a successful blog, it's important for your blog to have focus. You can't blog effectively on several unrelated topics in the same blog and expect to have many readers. It's unlikely that many potential readers will share your mix of passions -- a blog must focus on only one topic for maximum success.

Let me give you an example. I have a friend Jacque who is a born-again Christian and a passionate gambler. He lives for Jesus and he loves to gamble. He certainly doesn't have any problems with either. He can carry on a discussion without mentioning Jesus in every other sentence. He also doesn't have any problems with gambling. He is not out of control; he's just really into sports and likes to bet on sports. He spends far less than many other people do on their hobbies.

If he were to blog on religion and gambling, it probably wouldn't work very well. He couldn't build a really large readership. There are not a lot of people that are into both and also people involved in one may tend to not like the other. A similar issue is when someone blogs on their business, whatever it is they do that they are hopefully passionate about, and they blog on too many miscellaneous topics or perhaps too many personal details.

Now you certainly can go off topic sometimes.

Recently I adopted a little girl from Russia and you can bet I posted a picture on all my blogs and said, "Hey, I just adopted this wonderful little girl from Russia." However you are not going to read about my personal life every week. If I suddenly have a cold or a sinus infection, I am not going to blog about it, not in a business blog

If you already have a large following, you may be able to go off topic more often if you are still providing lots of content in your core focus.

For example, Bruce Schneier is a very popular blogger on security. He decided that every Friday he would blog about squid. Squid doesn't stand for anything technical in this case: just squid the animal, the creature swimming in the ocean. He didn't cut down on his normal posting. He still posted as much information on his normal topic, security, but he thought it was kind of interesting to blog on something entirely unrelated. He just posted something about squid every Friday. It didn't affect his popularity although there was a lot of talk and comments about it, but it didn't cut down on his readership.

Now Bruce may be a slightly special case, because he is such a popular blogger, but pretty much the same rules would apply regardless. He kept blogging just as much on his main topic as always and just inserted something kind of fun every Friday. It seems to workout fairly well for him.

In general you should stick to your topic. If you want to blog on all kinds of miscellaneous things, you can always start a personal blog in addition to your business blog.

As the name suggests, forum marketing is a way of gaining traffic from the forums by contributing to the content. There are so many forums available online covering any topics that you can think off. But to think of it, if you stumble across any topics that are not covered by any forums, do let me know (if you know what I mean).

Common Mistakes In Forum Marketing

1) Spamming

There are thousands of people who know that forums are a good channel to drive traffic and focus their attention on it. As a result, they spam the forums with zero value comments and posts. Forum marketing is about quality content rather than quantity count.

2) Not using eye-catching forum signature

Forum signature is an area where you can display text or links of your choice. This is the link you want the forum readers to click which will lead back to your blog. But often, I see casually written signature display on it which doesn't create any urge for the forum readers to click on it.

Achieve This Before Linking To Your Blog

As a rule of thumb, try getting up to 50 posts first before even recommending people to read your blog. Always give before thinking of receiving. Avoid being seen as a spammer by forum members as it will hurt your credibility in the long run. In most cases that I have seen, the easiest way to get banned by a forum is to start posting links to your website on your very first post and this is what I don't want it to happen to you.

Post 1 unique entry on your blog and put it as your forum signature. This increases the chances of forum members clicking on your link. Make the link description as compelling as possible.

Leveraging From Forums

My advice is to concentrate on 1-2 forums by posting regular comments as well as articles for better results. Find threads that you can add valuable comments on it and do it everyday. Build up your forum profile and you can easily leverage from it. Alternatively, you can start a new thread to share on your experiences of the topic and at the same time provide a lesson for the forum members to learn from your story.

Participate in forums that have active members and fresh threads are being created everyday to discuss on different questions. In this way, you are exposing your content and at the same time being more productive when you leave comments on the thread.

Tips To Improve Forum Marketing

1) Use compelling forum signature

There are simply too many signature links in a forum and how do you make yours attractive for the forum members to click on it? You can use my technique by creating a unique article and post it on your blog. Include the article link on your forum signature to drive traffic to your blog.

2) Use real name

You should be trying to get your name out to your topic market as much as possible and thus using your real name in the forum is a must. You notice that I am trying very hard to tell you to build up your credibility because we are living in a cruel world.

People only follow and believe what you say after you have carved a name for yourself. They will then be all out to get your attention because they hope to get some benefit out from you. I know everyone goes through the same process but shorten the time frame needed to build your credibility online.

3) Post only constructive comments and articles

Contribute only when you can add to the value. Do not post for the sake of increasing your post count in the forum. I need to stress on the importance of quality in forum marketing because there are simply tons of competition in it.

Blog Success - Your Blog Goals

In order to have a successful blog, it's important to have blogging goals.

What are your goals with blogging? If you don't have any goals, how can you know if you're succeeding, if your blog is working?

Ask yourself where do you want to end up with blogging? You are never going to get there if there isn't any "there." How do you know you've achieved your goals if you don't have them?

I suggest going beyond merely listing goals and choosing a primary goal. Your primary goal may certainly shift over time, as may all your goals.

Goals for a business blog might include establishing thought leadership, engaging customers in dialogue -- Microsoft has been extremely effective in that with their 4,000 plus bloggers, increasing awareness of your company and its offerings, or perhaps just becoming a better writer -- writing is a critical business skill.

For example, my primary goal with my first blog was simply to experiment and become familiar with blogs and blogging. Once that was accomplished, my primary goal became to reposition myself as a consultant. Traditionally, I was a technical guy and many of my older clients used me for my technical acumen only. However I'd been in business for myself for a good 15 years including a number of startups and a lot of consulting, and I learned quite a bit about business. Some of my newer clients used me for my business acumen. I used my blog to help position myself as a consultant with a lot of business experience and a strong technical background.

I strongly suggest you write down your blogging goals, preferably on paper! Schedule a review date on your calendar a few months out and revisit your blog goals then.

Have you made progress towards achieving them? Has your primary goal shifted?

If you love boating and have a passion about it, you can let other people know about it through a boating blog. A blog is a great way to interact with the world. You can write anything you want in your blog. You can give boating tips, pictures from trips that you have made or just talk about all of your boating expeditions.

The first thing you need is a blog host. There are many available websites out there for bloggers. The two most popular places you can find blogs are on Wordpress (wordpress.org) and Blogger (blogger.com). Both blog sites are free. If you want a built-in network, you can create a MySpace account and use the blog feature on the social network site.

If you want something more than a blog, create a website. Hosting a site isn't difficult. You can find some websites that are free, but they have many advertisers on their site. You can also get a website for cheap on the Internet. This is easy to do, but blogs are the easier of the two options.

Once you get the blog started, think of a title you want for the blog. Try to think of something creative because 'My Boating Blog' isn't going to cut it. Once you have the title down, you have to introduce yourself. You don't need to give your full name because there should be some information that is left confidential. Talk about why you love boating so this way people will be able to get a connection with you and understand your passion about boating.

Pictures are a great way to add to your blog. Take pictures of your boat and add pictures of your boating trips. You can give a bio for your boat. Talk about its features and the name of your boat. Describe how you got the boat and if you named the boat, how you got the name of the boat.

The point of your blog is to talk about boating. So put down anything you want. This is your blog and there isn't anything that you can?t talk about. You are in charge of what is put on the blog. If you want to talk about safety issues, then do it. If you want to talk about your fishing tales, you can do that too. There is no stopping you when it comes to talking about boats on your blog.

If you want people to contact you, include an email link. However, if you don't want anyone getting in touch with you, don't include any contact information on your blog. The way people can interact with you is through comments on the posts of the blogs.

To claim web 2.0 can be considered SEO on steroids would first require an exclamation as to what exactly is web 2.0. Over the recent past there's been a silent revolution taking place regarding the fundamental design and functionality of many popular web sites.

Formally the general structures of most online sites allow the visitor little or no ability to actually interact with the site itself much beyond leaving a name, email address, or some such other form of id. They were limited to the role of mere spectators with little or no say regarding site content, layout, or format.

The internet identified the need to expand communication channels between users and sites inducing a more interactive feel into the fabric of the web itself. This evolution was initiated by sites such as Amazon, which allowed its users to post product reviews allowing others to read.

Blogs are another example of Web 2.0. The ability for visitors and site owners to interact thru user comments and site owner responses have enhance the experience for both. Users have gained more influence over the site content.

Now we have video sites such as YouTube allowing users to upload their own videos for the entire internet to see and even rate. From there the list grows with other 'user oriented' sites such as Technorati, Digg, or Flikr. The emergence of social networking sites like MySpace, FaceBook, or Tweeter, to name a few, have helped accelerate the growth and popularity of interactive online sites.

Now how does all this relate to search engine optimization or for that matter how could it enhance SEO efforts for online marketers?

First you must consider how web 2.0 can be used to generate traffic for any online business.

Traditionally article submissions have been considered a great way to gain back links to your website benefiting your search engine rankings while also generating traffic for you. This process typically takes weeks or longer. On the other hand if you were to post this article on a web 2.0 site such as Digg and it was popular enough to appear on the main page you could conceivably receive tens or hundreds of thousands of visitors within the day. Additionally you would also have such a highly ranked site like Digg now linked to your site giving your search engine rankings a boost.

Other sites such as FaceBook, Squidoo, YouTube, or even blogs can give you the same lightning quick results utilizing their varying characteristics to get quickly indexed, recognized, and generate hordes of traffic for you.

How do you get the word out about your product or service? Is it Coffee, Vitamins, Energy Drinks or your Radio Show? How do you let everyone know this great idea you have? Provide great content on a regular basis.

I believe one of the best strategies for writing a great post is to first establish a problem and then provide solutions, as this will develop into a little Q&A blog that provides information on what people are looking for. Your readers will then come to recognize your ability to help them with some of the problems they may have, and if your solutions produce great results, they'll often return, or perhaps recommend your articles to others who may be facing those same problems you helped solve.

Keep in mind, you need to have a loyal audience in order for the word to spread from person to person, and this typically does not happen with a new blog. Other methods of promotion are usually required to get the ball rolling, and must be adapted for several months before your blog can go viral. This is not always the case, but is a very common trend amongst successful blogs. Like a business, you must develop a strong brand and good reputation, and play an active role in your niche community.

How do you do it?

Always record your teleseminars. That's the first place to start for repurposing your content.

You can turn that into an e-book, a mini e-course, a CD, a podcast, or a blog post. A recording from a teleseminar can be the hub of a wheel, with lots of spokes coming off from there.

Have that recording transcribed. Have the transcription chopped up and you or your editor decide how many blog posts will be posted.

Post With Your Mouth

If one of the big reasons you have a blog is to make money, then consider writing and posting product reviews. Product reviews are just what they sound like; a thorough review of a product - physical or digital. Your blog can go one of two ways - consist of only product reviews, or product reviews can be listed on a separate page or under their own topic heading on your blog.

The reason you should be interested in doing product reviews lies in the blue, underlined line of writing inside and at the bottom of your review. That link is your meal ticket because it's your affiliate link to the product. If a person clicks through it and buys the product, you get the affiliate commission.

If your blog is all product reviews, then you are aiming to be an authority site on the products in your niche. For example, if your niche is dog training, you can post in-depth and thorough reviews of each dog training program that is currently being sold in the marketplace.

This is a good way to go if you remember to use keywords in your reviews and in the titles of the reviews. People who are looking to buy will want to read some reviews first and if they like what you have to say, they may end up buying through you. These product reviews should sound as unbiased as possible; pointing out the pros, as well as a few cons, of the product.

A product review should be longer than an average post, but make sure you keep the paragraphs short with plenty of white spaces for easy viewing/skimming. Also understand that the more successful you get the more you are going to have people try and knock you down. Think of yourself as Mt Everest, no matter what anyone does to Mt Everest it does not fall. When people are trying to knock you down they are doing so because you are there. It isn't really personal against you it is more envy on their part.

Finally stay focused. Don't forget why you started your blog. While your goals may change, your opinion may change, why you went into blogging will not. It was to create online presence, brand your name, make money, help and educate people. Follow these simple steps and you and your blog will be successful!

I Am Blogging About the Hobbies That Make Me More Money Online

It's amazing how hard we will work to make money online, well if we don't know an easier way that is. Personally I worked my butt off 7 days a week and even then I wasn't making a full time living on the internet but once I realized I could make money online blogging about things I love, my hobbies, my entire online focus changed. It was like I was in heaven.

I tried blogging previously but it didn't seem to work for me but later I realized it wasn't the blogging that wasn't working it was the topics I had been choosing. I even forgot about blogging for a couple of years and continued doing the same thing I had been doing since early 2001.

I eventually decided to start a blog to share what I have learned over the years about fishing, fly fishing specifically. That is when the lights started to come on and they got brighter and brighter as the months of sharing when by.

I didn't do any advertising on this blog as it was jut an outlet for me to share my love of fly fishing.

I Was Finally Making Money Online

After about 3 months of sharing I noticed my traffic was up over 100 unique visitors a day and I was getting all kinds of keywords showing up in my cPanel stats. That's when I added a little bit of advertising.

I started out slow as I didn't want to turn off my new readers but over the following months I added more advertising. I added 3 adblocks that were 125x125 banners. I got them from Commission Junction and they were links to fishing supplies.

Next I added inline ads from Kontera. I will admit that Kontera doesn't make me a lot of money on one blog but when you add up all my blogs it's nothing to sneeze at. It also has to do with the growth of my blogs. Most of them are still less than a year old.

Well my fishing blog was working so well that I decided to start another blog but this time I went for gardening as my wife and I had just bought a new home with a second lot so we could start gardening. I figured I may as well share what I was learning and in that way others could help us learn by sharing through comments.

A few months after my first gardening blog started it was earning money for us as well.

Now I have 3 gardening blogs and 4 fishing blogs.

We are baby boomers ready for retirement and we love to travel. Well I decided to start a travel site where we would share our travel experiences. I didn't expect it to do much until we retired and started traveling more but it just took off and now it's the blog I make the most from.

The funny part about our travel blog is that I haven't shared any of our experiences yet. I have only put up private label rights articles that I purchased online. People just started requesting ad space on our travel blog and it just keeps getting better. I now have 4 travel blogs making money for us.

So in my humble opinion blogging is a most awesome way to make a living on the internet these days. The posts can be short so there is never a problem adding content and they seem to get indexed really fast as the search engines love blogs.

Avoid spamming though as you'll just irritate potential friends and you'll likely have your comments removed and lose your comment ability.

#8 Appearance Matters

Every blog service offers templates which can make your blog look unique or have a style you feel fits. Often you can also customize your blog with custom graphics and tinker with the layout. While this can really help your blog be careful that you aren't making it irritating to potential readers. Not many people want to come to a blog that hurts their eyes to look at or which has loud music they don't like.

Blog Keywords - How to Find and Use Keywords in Blog Posts

Almost everyone I know has a blog, even if it's only blog posts that they make on their Myspace page. A lot of people have something to say, and they find putting their thoughts down on virtual paper via a blog to be a great way to do it. And it is. First of all, there's an electronic record of your thoughts that you can look back on in the future, and, even more appealing in many circumstances, blogs are made in such a way that other people can easily find the material you've written.

On MySpace or other Social Network and Social Blogging platforms, that can be as simple as putting a status update or a bulletin out to your friends and letting them know you've put up a new blog post.

If you want to take your blogging to the next level, however, you will want to go beyond having a blog that your friends and family read, and write posts that are geared to get your content into the search engines.

This is where many people lose the thread. They aren't clear about how to do this.

It's actually fairly simple.

The first part consists of finding the right phrase, or "keyword," to write about. There are many ways to go about this, but here is what I think is the simplest and most effective. First, think of a broad idea you want to write about. If you keep a fitness blog, maybe that broad idea is "eating healthy." Next, plug that idea into a keyword research tool. There are thousands of these, of both the free and paid variety, all across the web. My favorite free tool is the good old Google AdWords external keyword tool. I figure, if I'm trying to rank in Google, why not get my information directly from them?

After the keyword tool processes your query, you will have a list of more specific phrases, as well as the search volume for those phrases. You will look for phrases that get medium to heavy searches and research those further.

The next step involves Google itself. When you see a phrase you're interested in, type it into Google inside quotation marks. This will tell you the amount of pages already in the search engines which have those exact words in that exact order. Those pages are your real competition.

When you have located a phrase that has medium to heavy search traffic and medium to low competition, you are ready to write your blog post!

When you write your post, make sure you use the phrase in the title of the post, and make sure your permalink structure is set up so that the link to the post includes the title. Use the phrase in the first sentence of your post, and the last. Try to use it once or twice in the main content of the article, as well, but don't push it if it's not natural. You don't want your writing to sound stilted.

There are good reasons to start a blog. You can be seen as an expert in your niche, you can let people know what's going on in your business, you can sell affiliate products with product reviews, and you can make money with your own products or with AdSense ads. But before you go ahead and start a blog, think first about why some blogs fail. If you keep these failings in mind before you begin, you can do what you need to do to make sure you don't fall into the same traps.

If you are already an expert in your field, that's great. If you're not, then it's going to be a lot harder to compete in a niche that is already dominated by experts. You'll have to work at building your credibility first before you can compete with the big boys.

But having said that, you can narrow your niche and specialize in your unique offerings. Just don't make the niche too narrow that you run out of stuff to blog about. Also, make sure there are people interested in your chosen niche topic. You need an audience of a lot more than one.

Another issue that can lead to failing is when people decide to have lots of blogs. That's not a problem by itself and can indeed make you good money, but you need to get one blog up and running smoothly and earning an income before you put the next one up. You need to develop a successful plan with the first blog so you can implement that plan with your next blogs.

I see some blogs failing because the owners are just in it for the money. You can tell they have no interest in the blog subject, they use PLR without bothering to rewrite it, and the blog is covered from head to toe with ads. Don't waste your time if you're not committed.

When you have a blog, you need to brand yourself - both with your logo and what your blog is about. What is your blog about exactly? If a new reader can't figure that out, they probably won't stick around. Stay within your blog subject and dive in deep. Readers interested in the subject will come back again and again.

Some blogs could have made it if their owners had just taken some time to analyze what was working and what wasn't. If you spend any time on successful blogs, you will see that they are constantly evolving. Staying stagnant = failure.

To be successful with your blog you need to market it to the right audience. Pick the right keywords when you do PPC and advertise on websites in the same or complimentary niches. Find a forum in your niche and become a contributor with quality posts.

In the beginning, when you first start blogging, you feel like you're blogging to yourself. You even get your mom and brother to leave comments so it looks like you have people reading your blog. Eventually, you start getting real feedback, but it's sporadic and lukewarm at best. You dream of writing a popular post that will not only make you feel good, but will get you a boat load of traffic - eyeballs looking at your blog and seeing what you're selling.

Creating a popular post for your blog is like showing up at a potluck with the best tasting dish around. Everyone loves your casserole, it's better than everyone else's casserole, people ask you for the recipe, you're seen as a successful cook, and they all want to invite you to their own potlucks. Word of your success travels and opportunities open up before you in ways you never dreamed of.

That's what a popular post can do. People will bookmark your site because of the wow factor of the post, many will comment on your blog, others will blog about it, quite a few will Digg it, you'll see a flood of unique traffic, your RSS subscribes and opt-ins will soar, and the monetizing strategies you have in place will start doing their thing.

So here's what you do:

Write a catchy, witty, attention-grabbing headline. If your title doesn't get their attention, they won't read your post. It's as straightforward as that.

Have a great first paragraph. This is make it or break it for most readers. If it's full of fluff, they're not going to want to read the rest of your piece. This is where you tell them what you're going to tell them and why they need to hear it (what's in it for them.)

You are probably not going to write all of your posts to be popular posts, but when you are aiming to write a grand piece, take your time writing it. Don't rush. Think about it, write it, put it aside, come back and polish it till it shines. Keep your eye out for grammar and spelling errors.

The posts that become popular are the ones that give people what they really, really want to know. So help people, no major strings attached. Give them hot new info, not rehashed ho-hum they can find easily and everywhere. Give them more than they are expecting. Don't be afraid to add some of your own personality or use a personal example when illustrating a point. Also, while you're being so helpful, offer other resources and links in your post.

Linking to other info in your post also has the added benefit of the sites you linked to returning the favor. They could give their blog readers or list subscribers a heads up about your article or even permanently link to it in their sidebar.

Keep your formatting pleasing to the eye. Have a picture, use bullets or numbers, bold subheadings, and break up your paragraphs into smaller chunks.

If you want your readers to rate your post or Digg it - ask them to. If you had them at "hello", then they'll be happy to comply with your request.

There's certainly no guarantee your post will become popular, but in order to stand a chance you should take a little extra time and thought and write it like a post you would really want to read.

Most people who start microblogs do so because they're just interested in talking about something. Whether it's their daily life, the goings-on of their town and surroundings, or their favorite hobby, microblogging is becoming the most popular way for people to get specific on the internet.

The thing is, though, microblogging takes time, and unless you're using a free host, it costs money too. Bandwidth continues to get cheaper every year, but with the advent of online videos, flash games, and other high-bandwidth objects cut into this. Additionally, all of the effort involved in microblogging makes it feel like a job, so why shouldn't you earn more than just praise and attention? You deserve a little money, right?

The thing is, when you decide that you want to make money with your microblog, you threaten to lose your independence. You will first have to make space for ads, which detracts from your own subject matter. Additionally, many advertising services do not inform you as to what ads will be shown on your website beforehand, meaning that the ads may be inappropriate for your demographic or content. After all, if you're microblogging about a local sports team, you're not going to win a lot of points with your visitors if an ad promoting the rival team is at the top of your blog! Also, many ads are just downright distracting, and are seen as a "cop out" by visitors. This is especially true if you've been getting by without ads for quite some time.

There are several ways to deal with this. One is to simply refuse to accept ads, and fiercely defend your independence even though it will cost you money. It's not an easy option, but if you've already got a good paying job and your bandwidth costs aren't too high, it may be the best one. A second is to offer premium services to those who are willing to pay more. Premium services (such as special articles or other content) are a great way to bring in money without giving in to "the man," and are much more effective than begging for donations. A third way is to offer ads, but to check them out first. There are many advertising networks out there now which offer very carefully tailored ads which will mirror or at least try to go along with the content of the website, and even try to not get in the way of the actual content.

In any event, it's up to you to find what works best for you, and how much (if any) of your independence you're willing to give up in exchange for a little cash. It is your blog after all, and most bloggers find that they can get by with few ads or no ads, especially if they are microblogging and thus have an inherently small audience. After all, one of the advantages of microblogging is that your small audience gives you the freedom to work with them and give them the information they require in order to make smart decisions, or just be entertained. Why compromise that by jamming in ads?

It displays the same information for all users, from all contexts, providing the classical hypertext, where navigation is performed through "static" documents.

To me a Static site means when you open a url to someone's blog or website the same information will come up each time. For example for my site it will be the home page and every time you click on this url the same information will show I have chosen to make the static page my home page.

A dynamic or normal page is one where the content of the site is stored and released when a user requests it. Say I had a forum to my site it would be a dynamic page as it would frequently change as new comments are posted.

Most blogs that have just one page are dynamic that is every time you post it goes to the top of the page and the most recent comments move underneath.

Creating a static page is ideal for, personal blogs, corporate sites, portals, directories & the like, where most of the site is targeted at anonymous users, and only the occasional feature (say, posting a comment or sending feedback).

How to create a Static Page in your Wordpress blog.

Wordpress has the ability to be "static", meaning that you actually use a 'page' as the first thing your visitor sees.
Wordpress displays what is called the 'blogroll' which are all the posts on your blog. This is considered dynamic; because it can change when you post... the content you see changes.

A static site will display a 'page' as the front of the blog. There is a setting under Wordpress /SETTINGS/READING that allows you to set what the Front Page is as well as what the Blog or Posts page is.

So that is it.

Once you create a blog, the first thing you should do is to do reciprocal linking between your site and blog. If your site has already been indexed, your blog will get indexed too in a short period of time. Usually it takes a few days for the search engines bots to arrive and index the contents of your blog. You can also do a little promotion to get your blog indexed faster. I will suggest two time tested methods: 1) Join an online forum and put a link to your blog in the signature and 2) Submit your blog to a few web directories. Forums get spidered daily and so your blog will get crawled and indexed in no time. Forums can also get you some traffic as other forum members may be interested in your blog. When it comes to directory submissions, an important note: Don't submit to too many directories in a short period of time. Search engines may equate this to link spamming and blacklist your blog or even ban it altogether.

Next, you should concentrate on creating quality content. You should always target keywords that are moderately popular. If you develop content without targeting specific keywords, you will not get enough traffic. This is why you should always keep keywords in mind while developing content for your blog. There are many free keyword research tools available. I use the free version of Wordtracker [http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com] to do my homework. There may be other tools available but I believe that the free version of Wordtracker is more than enough to get an idea about the keywords to be used.

Select key phrases that have three or more words i.e. long tail keywords as it is easier to optimize your blog for these keywords.While writing the content, ensure that the selected keywords get repeated evenly and the keyword density is just right. Also put the keywords in bold, italics, H1, H2 tags, etc. This helps in obtaining better search engine placements. Writing content is not difficult, but it does take sometime to write. If you do not have the time or patience to write, consider outsourcing it. You can easily hire a freelance writer for as low as $4/400 words. Give him/her the keywords and provide instructions as to what you need and you should have no problem in getting a good number of articles in a short span of time.

Update your blog often. Try to post at least 10 or more posts a month which makes one post for every three days. Also include images in your blog posts to get traffic from image search. Once you start getting traffic from search engines, try to funnel it to your main site. Apart from direct traffic, your blog will also act as a quality backlink to your site. As you may be aware, search engines rank sites on the basis of the number of relevant backlinks. If you use a free blog hosting service, the IP address of your blog will be different from that of your main site. Search engines give prominence to links from different IP addresses. This is why you would recommend using a free blog hosting service in place of hosting a blog on a sub-domain.

You can also monetize your blog traffic directly. You can add Adsense ads to your blog. If you use Blogger.com adding Adsense is much easier as it is integrated in your blog control panel. What is blog marketing? In reality a blog site is a free website. By submitting frequent posts full of original quality content, you can attract visitors and rank with the search engines. You use this to promote your business as you would an ordinary website.

There are millions of blogs online today with seemingly hundreds starting up each week. My question is why?

Answer. Money! All these people think that blogging is the missing link in their online business success. In fact they are encouraged in this by many experts online. Now, it seems that everyone is 'blogging for money'. You see, blogs are so simple to start that a pre-teen could start one.

However, there is a downside to blogging. It takes a lot of time to keep up regular posts and drive traffic to your blog, and a lot of effort to convert some of these into paying customers.

After a few days you begin to realize that the money is not flowing in. You have probably spent a lot of time working on your new blog and have not made a single penny. It's about now that you realize that this is about hard work.

If you are not making money and you put a value on your time you are now losing money every time you sit down and post to your blog. If you spend 30 minutes a day posting to your blog, you will spend 15 hours in a month and have nothing to show for it.

However, don't despair.

A really good blog is one that, once you start it, you would keep it up if you never made any money at it. The reasons for this are that the topic of the blog is a passion for you. It is not meant to be just about marketing. You should have an interest in the subject matter. You should be an expert in what you write about and your expertise shows.

Your readers come back over and over to see what you will say next. They pull out their credit card to buy a product you recommend. They click on a Google ad or subscribe to a newsletter. It is much easier when your blog is kept up to date with useful information. Do this and you will avoid the downside to blogging.

However that's the problem. You have to be passionate about your subject and you have to keep it updated regularly. Most of us will never write one post a day let alone one per month. The Internet is cluttered with blogs that were started with good intentions and abandoned like an orphan.

If you can combine your passion with hard work you can blog for money. However the money side of it should appear to your visitors to be somewhat secondary - almost an after thought.

Blogging is work. Don't be the victim of the downside to blogging. If your prime purpose is blog marketing and it doesn't work immediately, then persevere. Make a commitment to post at least once a week instead of daily. If you are passionate, this should be achievable

#2: Is the subject of your blog conducive to making money?

While the beauty of Blogging is that you can write on any topic you choose, there are topics that don't lend themselves readily to any sort of monetization. If yours is one of these blogs you might consider creating a second blog that is more easily aligned with advertising. Alternatively you should consider the use of keywords as a way to increase your search engine footprint and your traffic. The more search engine traffic you are able to acquire, the more likely you are to make money from your blog because more viewers means more spending potential.

If you're trying to get more eyeballs on your blog and more cash in your pocket, then there's one thing that fuels traffic and income...good content!

I'm going to cover the pillars to creating good quality, magnetic blog content that will bring in traffic, fans and fortunes if you stick with it for a few weeks.

1. Killer titles

If your goal is to get ranked in the search engines, you need to obviously focus on getting your keywords in your title. However, you also need to balance this with actually creating titles that people want to click on and read. Use controversy, mystery, benefits and breaking news as the triggers for all of your titles. If you can ask a question within your title, even better.

2. Make it "scan-able"

Nobody reads full articles in these hectic times, not generally speaking anyway. Even your biggest blog fan will have times when they need the meat from your content without being told about how poorly your cat is. So use bullet points, sub headlines, accents etc. Make sure you break up large paragraphs so it appears less daunting to read in one sitting.

3. Controversy

Nothing gets more attention (and raving loyal fans) than a person who speaks their mind and kicks up a little dust every now and then. Speak to your audience, don't just be another "me too blogger". Just make sure you don't say anything derogatory which could lead to legal troubles.

4. Use pictures

You only have to look at all the news papers every day and it's clear to see how important images are. 5. Use lists

Before we do, it's important to realize that there's nothing ethically or morally wrong with monetizing your blog. After all, the products you sell or ads you run from your blog will be aimed to help your readers, and it's their decision to engage in them at the end of the day.

1. AdSense

This is the old classic that still holds true for many bloggers. Because AdSense is so easy to implement into your site, and because the quality of the ads (and relevance) is so high, there's a lot of potential to get lots of clicks from running this simple script on your site. However, this might not exactly allow you to quit your day job just yet, unless you have a serious amount of traffic coming in to your blog daily.

2. Affiliate Programs

There's no end of products you can promote as an affiliate and in many cases (particularly with digital download sales) you can earn a significant share of the revenue, sometimes up to 100% in a few cases. It's really just a case of finding a good affiliate network, signing up and picking products to promote that tie in with your blog content. The more you hand pick individual products to promote based on individual posts, the higher your revenue will be. Don't just slap one product on the sidebar; you need to actively presell the product by talking about it, and the problems it solves.

3. Selling Advertising Space

Just like making money from AdSense ads on your blog, there needs to be substantial (and targeted) traffic to your blog in order for you to attract media buyers (the people who buy the ad space from your site). Furthermore, advertisers will want to know precise demographics of your average blog readers, such as their age, location and reading habits (how long they stay on your site and what they respond to in terms of your content and other ads). You can get this information by visiting Quantcast.com and using their scripts to gather all of this data from your blog, which you can then present to interested buyers of ad space on your blog.

If you are new to blogging, there are surely a number of successful blogs that you admire. These admired blogs probably have significant readership. More than likely, you probably wish you could have a portion of their readership. Well, such a wish can be facilitated. There is a way you can have a portion of such a blog's readership. You simply need to tap into the huge volume of traffic this blog possesses. And, yes, there is a way and it comes in the form of guest blogging for profit.

As the title of this article indicates, you would simply write a blog entry for the popular blog. Ok, perhaps we are making this sound a little easier than it is. You simply can't post a blog entry on someone else's blog unless they give you a green light. The thing is, some of these popular blogs will give you a green light to write for them. These blogs would be those that accept unsolicited submissions from readers. If you come across such a blog and have an article that would pique their interest they might be inclined to publish your blog submission. Of course, you would add a link to your own blog at the end of your article. Usually, this would be placed in a brief bio of the guest blogger. ("To read more from AUTHOR check out BLOG URL) A free link would be a fair trade off for an excellent blog article. Of course, your article would have to be very interesting and well written to be accepted but that is a given.

Now, you do not have to direct traffic to a blog. You could also send it to a website you publish or any other online venue that your are promoting. But, if the link directs itself to a site that is a wee bit overly commercial ("Get paid to fill out surveys!") you may find your link nixed. Just use a little common sense in this regard and things will work out fine.

How to Blog - 3 Tips on What to Post About on Your Blog When You Can't Think of What to Write About

Deciding on what to write about on your blog can be very difficult for people, especially if you are new to blogging. Even if you have been a blogger for some period of time, the day will always arise when you just can't think of what to write. This has happened to me when I am very tired, have just finished writing several articles on unrelated topics, or have just completed an eBook or short report, regardless of the topic.

There are several good ways to remedy this situation. One way that I use to have fresh new content on my blogs at all times is to ask other people to be guest bloggers. This gives them an opportunity to write about what they are doing and to share their expertise with a whole new group of readers. I tell them to promote whatever they like, and be sure to include information on where the readers can find out more about them in the future. It is a win-win-win for me, the other blogger, as well as the readers.

Another way is to go to an article directory, such as Ezine Articles, and find articles in the categories that would be a good fit for your blog. Anyone who publishes their articles in these directories is giving their permission for the articles to be used on other sites, such as blogs, websites, and in ezines.

The only rule you must adhere to is that you must include the person's resource box from the end of the article, which includes information about them and the link to their site, or to wherever they wish for the reader to go once they have read the article. I find the best written and most compatible articles, and then use them on my own blogs. This again helps me, the writer of the article, and the readers.

The third way to find new ideas to write about on your own blog is to read other blogs on your topic, which you should be doing anyway, and write blog posts that discuss the other person's post. You can include a link to that exact post, which is called the permalink (short for permanent link). Also, you may want to send a trackback to the author of the other blog, letting them know you have discussed their post on your blog. This is a great way to connect with the other blogger, which may lead to an even greater connection in the future.

These are three ways to write blog posts when you just cannot think of what to write about any other way, and they are all beneficial to others at the same time. This makes your blog even better, and increases your credibility and visibility at the same time.

WordPress Blogs - Five Essentials to Get Started With Your WordPress Blog

Essential 1

Pick your domain name and buy it. As of recently, there were more than a hundred million domain names registered. That's a lot, but not all of the good ones are gone. So start at domaintools.com, and start searching for your perfect domain name.

Whatever you do, get a dot com domain unless you have reason to get something else. Customers and people on the Internet just automatically default to dot com; they think that everything is dot com. So what if you got a dot net, because your dot com wasn't available, and it was one of your competitors? Well, a person browsing the web might just type in that name plus dot com and go right to your competitor. So, that's not very cool. You need to get the dot com domain name. You can go to GoDaddy or your current registrar to register it.

Essential 2

Pick your hosting. Pick a host that has Cpanel with Fantastico. Even if you don't know what "Fantastico" means right now, that's fine.There are several good hosting companies out there but my number 1 recommendation is HostGator. They have superior customer service and up time and they are reasonably priced.

Essential 3

It's time to point your name servers. You're going to put point them from your registrar, to your hosting company.

When you set up your hosting account, you probably (I hope!) got a welcome email that had your name servers in it. Like NS1.HostGator.com, and NS2.HostGator.com. It'll be in that format, but it won't be those exact words, but it'll look like that. All you have to do is go back to your domain registrar and when you get into your domain account, you'll find (it varies from host registrar to registrar, but they're all basically the same) the place where you can change your nameservers. It's probably going to be a clickable link called "name servers." Do not choose:

Forward

Redirect

Do not do either of those things because we're pointing this domain name to your hosting account. So all you have to do is click on "name servers," and say "custom name servers." Replace their name servers with the name servers that you got from your hosting account. Make sure you spell the correctly because if you make a typographical error, your name servers will never come over to your hosting account. They'll be out there internet limbo somewhere, and you won't be able to find them unless you go back to your registrar account. So, it's picky and it's a couple of steps, but it's not really hard, hard to do.

Essential 4

Now that we've pointed our name servers, we're going to set up the domain on your hosting account. Pointing is not enough; you have to actually set up your domain on your hosting account. So, with HostGator, you choose an add-on account. For example with ThirdSphere you chose "park a domain." So, hosts are different. If you don't know how to set up your account, send them a support ticket. Many of them have pretty good help sections. This is one of the most difficult things that you're going to do, so just ask your host.

I'm singling out GoDaddy because so many, many people host with them and they have really become a really good hosting company. With GoDaddy, the best way to set up your domain is with a separate economy hosting account. Each domain that you have should have it's own economy Linux hosting account.

They're very inexpensive.

They keep things nice and separate.

You don't have to worry about trying to map a domain here, or map a domain there.

It's just really easy to set up these separate accounts on GoDaddy. So, that's what I suggest with them.

Now you're going to install WordPress. With Fantastico, it's almost a one-click install - you click on WordPress and answer their questions and the auto install takes over. It's really not that difficult - with these instructions you can really do it.

As you may know, keyword research is the foundation to online success. Do you want to know how to find the best keywords for your blog? Well then, keep reading.

What I'm about to share with you should be done before you set up your blog. But, if you already have set up your blog, that is okay. Just take the long-tail keywords you find and use them as blog posts (with the keywords in the blog post title).

Here is how to find the best keywords for your blog:

Step 1: Finding Monthly Keyword Searches

The first thing to do is to determine the topic of your blog. I'm assuming that you have already your topic. Now the next step is to enter the main keyword into a search tool like Google Keyword Tool.

Typically, this keyword is one word like golf, baby, or toy. These keywords by themselves are far too competitive to be able to rank well in the search engines so we are going to use the search tool to find a keyword phrase that has less competition. Identify the keywords that have two or more words together. These are called keyword phrases. Note the ones that have the highest amount of searches per month. Stay away from keywords less than 1500-2000 a month. You will build your blog around this keyword phrase. But first, we have to check the competition.

Step 2: Finding Keyword Competition

Now, take those phrases and run a search on them in Google with quotes around the phrase to find out how many competing pages there are. If the amount is less than 200K, you have a good keyword phrase. Do this until you find a good main keyword phrase.

Step 3: Gathering Long Tail Keywords

Okay, so now you have a main keyword phrase. During your search, you probably came across many similar phrases. You can take all of the related keywords and use them as blog posts. In order to have a good chance of ranking well in the search engines, you may want to use the allintitle check in Google. Just enter allintitle: your keyword phrase to find out how many people have optimized their titles with that keyword phrase. Anything under 10,000 is good.

To find even more long tail keywords you can do a search on your main keyword phrase and enter the URL of the first listing into the Google Keyword Tool.

Why start blogging? Consider your own reasons for thinking of starting a blog. There are different reasons why someone may start a blog. Not only can this bring direct traffic, but also provides another backlink to your blog which is great for a little SEO boost. When would this be most effective? Probably when I have a contrasting opinion to your original post or if I have something helpful (or controversial) to add to the original post.

There are too many details to go into here, but believe me when I say that c-panel hosting is the way to go.

Then you will need to choose a theme for your WordPress blog. There are thousands of free themes available, as well as many that you can purchase. You can search for these online very easily. I prefer a theme that is two columns, with my sidebar on the right, and also one that is widget ready. This means that you can easily add the plug-ins that WordPress is known for, like the ones for video, search engine optimization, and audio capability.

No matter if you decide to go with a hosted WordPress blog, or the simplicity of a Typepad blog, either way you will own your blog and be able to create a site that will enable you to build your online business.

As I went on my long journey to become a physician, I did not feel that I had the proper guidance. It seemed every time I needed an answer, I had to search deep and wide to find it. Not many were honest about their experiences in medical school, residency, and as an attending. There was so much uncertainty. What do I study? How long should I study? What books are the best? How do you balance medicine and life? These and a ton of other questions were always on my mind. If you leave a really good comment (which I recommend), many readers of the blog will also follow your link to see who your are and what your blog is about. So remember, leave relative comments and never spam. Bloggers never like receiving comments that say "Hey nice blog."

Another way to get more traffic is by generating backlinks. This will not only increase your direct traffic, but will also increase your traffic from search engines like Google. There are many ways to trade or generate backlinks and they are all effective in different ways.

To start out, I would encourage you to find other blogs related to yours as contact them about swapping links. This could be as simple as putting each other on your blogrolls and linking to one another. This is a great way to get relevant links to your blog.

3. Use The Power of Forums

Forums are one of the most beneficial things to spend your time doing. You will learn more about internet marketing and how to increase your search engine rankings.

If learning and getting tips wasn't enough, you can also place links in your signature. That way every time you make a post in a forum, you have a link at the bottom that points to your website. The basic premise behind FeedBurner, for any reader who may not know, is rss or Really Simple Syndication. This allows bloggers to submit there feed to the network and in turn any readers who want to can simply subscribe and view a live text feed of the blog in any online reader. Each blog has its own feed URL which the posts are published on. Subscribers using FeedBurner, or other similar feed readers, then subscribe to the blog posts without having to visit the site every day. It is much easier for subscribers to read the site with a reader. Although it is much harder to monetize than a normal blog it helps to build readership and following thanks to its ease of use.

Some Simple Steps to Set Up FeedBurner

1. Head on over to FeedBurner.com and set up a free account for your blog.

2. Next, you will need to set up your blog feed. If you already know your blog feed than you can enter it in the field that is provided (you can't miss the field). If you don't know your feed it is generally something like yourblogtitle.com/feed. However, you can also just enter the URL for your blog and Feed Burner's automatic feed searcher should pick it up for you. Just follow the setup process through until the configuration page and be sure to click the Pro option because it is now free since Google has acquired it.

3. Now you need to put the code for your feed onto your site. This will allow people to subscribe to your blog. If you do not have any rss or feed buttons such as this one go to the publicize tab in the FeedBurner main page. Select the option to add chicklets and this will allow you to choose one that you like and give you the code for that chicklet. Then, either using a wordpress textbox widget or imbedding the code directly into your script place the widget on your site.

4. Technically you need to imbed the code for your feed into your widgets but a very simple way to do this is to download the wordpress plugin FeedSmith. This will do all the FeedBurner coding work for you. Simply download FeedSmith. Next, upload it to your plugins folder. Once it is uploaded you need to activate it and enter your feed URL, which if you remember you can find in your FeedBurner account homepage.

The one thing about blogging is that after awhile, it can be difficult to come up with interesting topics that people will want to continually read. Sooner or later the ideas dry up and you may sit there and wonder where the new ones will come.

This happens to me more than I care to admit, so here are a few things that help me recharge my well of ideas:

Current Events

Often picking up the paper or checking the news online is an easy way to come up with quick topics. Especially, with the market crashing, there are topics aplenty.

Previous Posts

Looking through previous posts can trigger your memory and you may want to elaborate on something you've already written.

Something Unrelated

Do a post on something personal or a topic that is not related to your blog. I think I might do a post on movies sometime. I really love movies.

Take a Break

Take a break - burnout could be setting in and it might be wise to pause and reflect. But don't take too much time off - fickle blog readers might not come back to your site!

Guest Postings

Have someone else do a post on your site. It will give you a break plus it will be interesting for you readers to hear from someone else for once.

I actually like to schedule my posts ahead of time so that I never run out of ideas but sometimes with life being hectic and busy, it can still be difficult.

At the end of the day, inspiration is all about perspiration - that means you have to put the time and work in!

Is Writing Great Content Enough to Build a Popular Blog?

Many people have asked that question, and I thought I should give my two cents on the subject.

I don't think it is necessarily to have to succeed in the short term, just because you write good content and even if you don't do any promotion at all. Sure if you have anything absolutely revolutionary people will find it sooner or later but there are plenty of other sites that also have great content.

There is also the issue about what genre you are writing in. Some genres are just more popular than other, and if you have managed to find something really small you may have a problem. Although if you write in English in this globalized world, I think the risk that the genre is to small is probably very slim.

Good content

Now don't get me wrong here. Great content is the absolute core of a blog. If you don't care about your content you will fail sooner or later, no matter of how much marketing or money you use. But with great content and a few marketing ideas you should get your share of visitors. Just to illustrate the importance of content I can mention that one of the best link building strategies actually is to write good content. Link baiting. The idea is that people will link to your site if you provide something special. You must just know what kind of posts that are likely to draw peoples attention.
