Make Money Blogging - Why You Need a Great Blog Title

By Tracey A Edwards

If you are creating a blog for the purpose of making money then no doubt you already know the importance of traffic. No matter how interesting your blog is, how valuable your information is, if no-one ever finds it then they only people it is going to benefit is your best friend (because you sent him your link) and your dog (because he gets to sleep at your feet while you type away). But just how do you get that traffic so you can make money blogging?

Before you even start thinking about writing your first post you need to think about your blog title. The title of your blog is the first thing that users will see if they find your site on search engines so it needs to be something compelling enough to click on, however it also needs to take into account basic SEO with the sort of keywords that people will be searching on.

Let's look at an example. Let's say you want to blog about Grey's Anatomy because it's your favorite television show and you love writing about it. (Note: You don't have to write about typical 'money-making' topics to make money with your blog - that's what is so great about blogging). First we need to think about what sort of keywords that your readers might be searching about. "Grey's Anatomy" is an obvious keyword but what else might people be searching for about this show?

The free version of Wordtracker is one of my favorite keyword tools and after typing in Greys Anatomy it tells us that there are approximately 1103 searches per day (which is fantastic) however after searching for it on Google itself it reveals that you would be competing with over five million other webpages which is far too competitive to get traffic. Looking down our list of other keywords then you spot this one which could work well: "Grey's Anatomy Episodes" which only competes with just over 11,000 other web pages and still gets ok traffic. You could easily write one blog post per episode.

Now that our SEO is done, we also need to consider making our blog title exciting to make it stand out from the other webpages. Since you are writing a fan blog on the TV show something like "Grey's Anatomy Episodes from a Fan's Perspective" or just simply "Grey's Anatomy Episodes - My Blog" could work. Now you have a blog title that works for both SEO and something a reader might want to click on.
