Make More Money From Your Blog - AdSense Or Affiliate Programs?

By Tracey A Edwards

You've created a blog that you are proud of and now you want to add in some monetization features into it, but you are not sure whether you should use AdSense or Affiliate Programs. Well if your plan is to make more money from your blog then why not add both?

There is no doubt that you will probably make more money in the long run from promoting affiliate products because they usually have a high commission rate (depending on whether you choose real products or downloadable products) and so obviously the bulk of your blog should be dedicated to recommending these products. But there are some visitors that were probably never going to buy anything anyway so instead of them just leaving it makes sense to at least try and earn a few cents off them as they go.

So how is the best way to set up a blog with both AdSense and Affiliate recommendations?

Obviously you would want the item that makes you the most money (affiliate programs) to be the most clearly obvious choice on the page. It's always a good idea to see if the product you are recommending comes with pictures or banners, as images draw the eye much more than text links.

Your prime real estate for your blog is the top and left of the page so that is where you want to concentrate your efforts most for the affiliate offers. Try adding a banner at the top of the page and a picture of the item you are promoting in the left hand column.

That leaves using the right or bottom for placing your AdSense ads. That means after someone has finished reading, if they are not interested in finding more about the product you recommend they can click away on one of the ads at the bottom of the page and you won't have made nothing.

6 Ways to Improve Your Blogs Performance

By Terry Philpott

Is your blog in need of a boost? Here are 6 ways to improve your blogs performance and promote its growth.

1) Visit and comment on other blogs within your niche

As a blogger it's common to visit other blogs within your niche both for camaraderie and research. Participating actively by leaving comments, when appropriate, is an excellent opportunity to gain readers by inserting your link within your signature file.

2) Post useful and entertaining content

Remember a blog is only as good as its content. Be sure what you post is relevant to the niche you're in. Making your content entertaining and useful to the reader will also encourage them to not only return but also refer others to your site.

3) Listen to your readers

By reading and responding to comments left at your blog you can open channels of communication with your readers. This type exchange will give you a better idea of what they want and what improvements you can make to attract more visitors and maintain the readership at your blog. This will help develop a greater feeling of community amongst your readers.

4) Personalize your Blog

Learn to stand out from the crowd by being YOU. Be sure your blog has your imprint whether it's in your delivery style (attitude, humor, or intensity) or perhaps blog design. Don't be afraid to let it show since this is the single biggest factor that will differentiate you from the rest. By delivering your messages in a more natural fashion you will allow visitors to get a better sense of who you are, impressing upon them your individuality, while also making your posting much more enjoyable and less like work.

5) Use outbound Links to your advantage

Don't be afraid to defer your readers to other sites for additional information. The school of thought here is simply to provide your visitors with as much useful content as possible. By providing outbound links you are clearly indicating you have the interest of your readers in mind and they will recognize and appreciate that. It is impossible to be 'all things to all people' therefore utilize the knowledge of others, when appropriate, to enhance your site as not only a source of information but also a site with its reader's best interest at heart.

6) Blog Reviews

Here's a solid way to entice both new and old readers to your site. On a scheduled basis be it weekly or monthly do a review of the best blog posts from within your niche for that given time period. Hopefully you're already 'crawling' around your niche for educational and social benefits. Now let's put these results to further use and write about them. Here we're using the magic of outbound links as previously discussed while providing useful content for our readership.

By implementing these 6 ways to improve your blogs performance you'll not only realize an increase in traffic but also a greater appreciation of your overall subscriber base by their continual visits.

Strategies For Increasing Blog Traffic Online

By Sean R Mize

Strategies

There are various strategies to increase your traffic for a blog, with the goal of creating the maximum exposure for each post. You want to use all the features available for that. So, that when you initially write a post, you will want to follow these steps:

1. Identify a topic of major interest to your readers,

2. Choose appropriate keywords for SEO or use plug-in,

3. Write it up and tag it with relevant tags,

4. Categorize it to make it easy to find in your blog,

5. Add interesting and helpful content,

6. Publish it,

7. Bookmark it,

8. Submit it to news sites,

9. Respond to all comments to generate a discussion,

10. Go to other blogs with similar topics and post comment and backlink.

You also want to research which posts were the most successful and steer your future blog articles in that direction. That's pretty easy to tell because your administrative panel will show the number of people who found your post and probably read it. It should also indicate which are the top posts of all, and that can also be valuable information.

If you happen to get a trackback from another blogger, this is really great news! A trackback is a reference back to your post from another blogger with a similar post. This can generate instant traffic for your post and you may be wondering where it's coming from, until you see the trackback. So, make sure trackbacks are enabled on your site.

One of the ways search engines determine how to rate your content is by the number of backlinks. So, when you work with a number of other bloggers, you can raise each other's post values by linking back to posts or using trackbacks.

Lastly, if you are still having trouble raising interest, try to ride on the coat-tails of other popular blogs that have made the front page of some tagging or news site. You simply put a comment in their blog with a link back to your post. Or, you can try to respond to an interesting article online with your own commentary and offer a link back to their blog. Then, add a comment showing your own controversial view of the topic to get extra readers by sharing your link.

How to Use Blogs to Generate Traffic Online

By Sean R Mize

The Internet has made it exceedingly easy for anyone to start a web log (blog) and use it to capture attention. Even teenagers and Fortune 500 companies have discovered the magic of writing a blog to attract attention and generate a consistent readership. Blogs are excellent vehicles for communicating news, keeping in touch with many people at one time, highlight your expertise, act as an introduction to a larger website, and keep fresh content constantly available to the search engines and everyone visiting your blog.

Familiarize Yourself With Blogs

If you've never actually done a blog, you will be surprised at how easy it is to set up an account. You can use any of the blogging portals out there like Wordpress.com or Blogger.com. They allow you to set up a targeted account and put up a blog simply by registering with them. They offer design templates that you can choose by clicking on your favorite design. They give you an administration panel that makes it easy to add features or remove them. It really is one of the simplest ways to start getting a web presence out there completely targeted! You don't pay for the account, the storage, or anything else. In return, the site might put up some advertising on your blog, but when you're ready to take it up a notch, you can always pay to get that removed.

So, don't be intimidated by a lack of knowledge of computers or the Internet. You don't have to be technically talented at all to start a blog! Later, as you continue to use the blog, you may want to add pictures and videos, and that may take some learning, but it still is nothing to break out in a heavy sweat over.

Write Great Content

At first, all you will need to do to start generating traffic is to make sure that you have great content on your blog. Your blog should have a specific niche that you've researched and that can be sure to draw crowds. Many first-time bloggers make the mistake of using the blog as a personal diary, with random posts on various subjects. This may prove interesting to a few people, but it's not sufficient to draw traffic from the major search engines that like targeted content better. So, pick a niche, and develop interesting content around that niche.

Try to review your posts before publishing to make sure they are relatively targeted of misspellings and grammatical errors. Try to include titles, subheadings, bulleted lists, and white space to make the copy easy on the eye. Many readers do not want to come into a blog and see a single paragraph written in poor English, no matter how interesting the subject. It's just too hard to read.

Understand SEO

Once you have a good schedule going for blog posts, you will want to start to research Search Engine Optimization (SEO). It seems a very technical term, but it only has to do with how big search engines rate content to decide how far up the results page it will show when someone does a search on that particular topic or keyword. Well, knowing that the search engines do have rules they follow to rank content, you should use that knowledge to create posts that automatically rank higher and get a heck of a lot more attention that way.

You can index your posts with keywords that have a high search volume within the search engines. You can add keywords throughout the copy to get a good rating for that keyword. Research potential keywords using Adwords Keyword tool to locate words that might be of benefit for you to use. Then, include them in your copy being careful to not exceed 2% for word density. So, if you have a 500 word post, and you have a single keyword, it should not appear more than 10 times (.02 X 500). If you have a density somewhere between 1% and 2%, you won't be penalized for overusing the keywords in your copy by the search engines, which can blacklist these sites. Or you can use plug-ins to help with SEO too.

Plug-Ins

Blogs offer plug-ins, small applications that are programmed separately and installed separately, to let you do a number of additional things on your blog. Wordpress has numerous plug-ins that allow you to add features like spam control and even monetize your blog. You can explore these plug-ins to help augment the features that you can provide for your audience and gradually make your blog more and more interesting. One of the ones that can help you optimize your blog for SEO is called All In One SEO Pack. See the resources section for more information on this plug-in.

Network

Whether you are a newbie or an old hand, you want to continue to network with other bloggers, particularly those in your core niche. Pay attention to the strategies they are using to gain attention and when you see them being successful, emulate them. Maybe they've added some feature to their site and now you see many more comments. Maybe they are discussing a particular topic that has landed them on a front page of a news outlet. Whatever it is, keep a sharp eye out for not only the ways they are operating their blog, who they are associating with, but also the topics and posts that generate the most eyeballs. Then, simply copy that strategy.

Another way to network successfully is to be a part of a blogger group like Wordpress or a circle of bloggers who regularly post on each other's blogs. You can even create groups of writers who are willing to contribute posts to your site to generate interesting content without you having to do all the work. Since these bloggers come in with their own audience and network, your traffic will climb up as they advertise their post on your blog.

Get Your Website Reviewed by Prominent Bloggers

By Nevil Darukhanawala

A large part of off-page SEO strategies revolve around link building, directory submissions, article submissions, social bookmarking, vertical engines submissions and blogger reviews.

While blogger reviews may not have made it into mainline internet marketing strategies for companies in India as of yet, it is slowly becoming an important marketing strategy that SEO experts are adopting to achieve higher rankings in search engine results for their clients.

The main reason is that getting links from established, well promoted and high profile bloggers to your website, and to certain important pages of your website (i.e. deep linking) gives you permanent one-way links to the inner pages of your content.

Link building within relevant content (to the inner pages of your website) is great for search engine rankings and building quality links. Any SEO expert will vouch how difficult it is to achieve that with only directory submissions and other forms of link building.

Well established bloggers have built a reputation and readership over the years, and their readers trust their reviews and opinions. Getting an honest review of your products and services from such bloggers will give your website instant credibility amongst their readers in addition to build permanent one way links to your website.

What's important to note is the word 'honest review'. Don't expect the blogger to write some fantastical review about a product or service that's not up to the mark. Most bloggers value their credibility built over years, and will not damage it for one review.

When a blogger endorses or reviews a product or service, they are in fact telling their readers that they have tried the product, or used the service and give their honest opinion about it.

This stamp of approval (and sometimes even a critical comment) from an established blogger will get the traffic to your product, service or website.

If you do get a critical comment from a blogger who is reviewing your product or service, ensure that you answer that comment immediately. This lets the bloggers readers know that you are interested in enhancing your product and service and value suggestions to improve the same.

Later on you can let that blogger and his readers know that you have implemented that suggestion. Can you see how this could go a long way in building your credibility and business online?

All marketers will agree that there is no better marketing strategy than the good ol' word-of-mouth, and in the online business it no different.

While selecting a blogger to review your product or services:

1. Ensure that the blogger is well established (blogging for atleast a year)

2. Check the Page Rank for the Blog (atleast 2 or above is good.

3. Ask to check the hits report or Google Analytics report for the blog

4. What is the profile of people who visit the blog? Would this TG (Target Audience) be interested in knowing more about your products and services?

5. Read through the blogger last few posts, the quality of his writing, and the time gap between the posts. Check for consistency, good style of writing and passion.

6. Check to see if readers are leaving behind intelligent comments, and if the blogger is replying satisfactorily to those immediately.

At the end of the day, Bloggers are consumers themselves and like reviewing and giving their opinions about brands, products and services they like or dislike. Bloggers are humans and feel and think like you, so build a relationship that's not based on link building.

And lastly, always do a follow up with the bloggers within a month and ask them how you can be of help to them and their readers. Many bloggers may just tell you what they are looking for, and be willing to give credits to the source of information.

5 Tips For Building (And Selling) A Successful Blog

By Matthew Coers

Earlier this week, a 22 year-old man named Johns Wu sold his blog, Bankaholic to BankRate for $15 Million. ArsTechnica.com, a technology blog, sold in May for $25 Million to Conde Nast. And in July, the Guardian bought the financial blog PaidContent.org for over $30 Million.

Do you have a blog?

The fact is there were some big transactions that happened in the last few months, and they made headlines. These are just a few of them, and they don't include all the hundreds of blogs that sold for (merely) several hundred thousand dollars. Perhaps you might be thinking how you could to do the same thing?

After all, if you can write well, then there isn't anything that Johns Wu did that you cannot.

The fact is that new blogs are popping up all the time, and many people have been able to bring their blogs from launch to "sold" in just a couple years - sometimes even faster.

Here's the reality check: most blogs don't sell for millions of dollars. But many of them generate significant income, and can sell for tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars if they are built and marketed correctly.

The trick is to know what the most successful bloggers do, and imitate their success. As you can imagine there is a systematic approach they use, and our free eBook, "How To Build a Successful Blog" examines their processes in detail.

Here are a few quick tips to get you started:

1. Pick a marketable (and interesting) subject - in order to make money, blogs must focus on subjects that are interesting to millions of potential readers. The subject also needs to be something that companies are willing to associate their brands with. In our eBook we give you a great method for developing your subjects.

2. Update often - most bloggers give up on their blogs after only a few weeks. The ones that are most successful update at least three times per week (preferably 5 times per week), and never stop. Keep it up to date, and your readers will keep returning for more.

3. Embrace your friends - some visitors to your blog will be in a position to help you attract more readers. Often these people have blogs themselves, and will promote you for free to their own readers if you promote their blog to yours.

4. Reach out to Whales - There are other bloggers and website owners who already enjoy tens or even hundreds of thousands of readers every day. If you can establish a relationship with these individuals, then you can potentially catapult your blog months ahead of where you would otherwise be if you were forced to rely on incremental growth.

5. Leverage your existing blogs - once you get your first blog started, it becomes easier to leverage it to create new ones. Most bloggers are capable of maintaining several blogs at once, but just be careful not to bite off more than you can chew.

These are just a few tips you can implement to help your blog become more successful. It may not make you rich overnight, but it will put you in the running to making a living doing what you enjoy - writing blogs.

Blogging is Not Always Personal

By John Mcdonald

The word blog is a shorter form of the words "web" and "log" but these days, blogging software can be used to create any topic or subject of website you're interested in.

At a basic level, this blogging software creates an easy-to-use interface that allows publishers to create multiple pages under the same visual guidelines. The software also includes dynamic means of updating third-party software when new content is published. This is accomplished through what is known as RSS feeds, pings, and trackbacks.

However, there is a bias among some that blogs are just personal websites, literally web-logs of an individuals private life. Some people imagine that typical posts are only about last night's dinner, pictures of the latest family pet, or just a rant about work. Of course, such personal blogs are still popular - and they provide a great way for individuals to keep in touch with friends and family. But this isn't the only type of blog that can be written - and these days, they are shrinking in terms of relative share.

Some of the fastest growing websites in today's blog-o-sphere are about video games, Hollywood entertainment, political elections, and of course - the economy. These blogs create a place on the internet where professionals and interested enthusiasts can debate the latest subjects of interest and intrigue around the world. Blogging about a subject or even just participating in such blogs can even help individuals learn about any topic they want to know more about.

So if someone says that they have a blog, don't assume it is just for family reunion photos and news about the next office scandal at a corporation you don't work for. Blogs can be written about any subject you can imagine - and if there is anything that hasn't been blogged about yet you could probably make some easy money by being the first one to do it.

How to Avoid Information Overload and Get Blogging

By Jane Robinson

Are you finding it difficult to achieve your goals, finding that you run out of steam? Struggling to post to your blog? Perhaps you are overloaded? Perhaps you need to look at your time management and see where the problems lie?

You could say that there are 3 main types of overload

1. Information overload

2. Project overload

3. Task overload.

The first Information overload is what it says on the tin. You get all sorts of information thrown at you all the time. It makes you lose focus and there are methods you can try to deal with that.

The second, project overload means that you have so many things on the go at the same time that seem to have the same priority and seem to be equally important. How do you distinguish between them?

The third, task overload is more the day to day overload. You have you medium and long term projects and then you have your day to day projects. Do you feel that there aren't enough hours in the day? Does your "to do" list just get longer and longer?

These are life issues; they are not specific to internet marketing or blogging. If you can put strategies in place to deal with them you will find you have more time for the important stuff like making money if that is your aim or simply giving yourself more time for equally (or more) important things like family and friends. I don't pretend I get it right by any stretch of the imagination but as procrastination is my middle name, it's a battle I fight all the time.

You need to find your gradient. If you are finding things overwhelming, then come down the gradient a bit. If you are finding things a little too easy then march up it a bit more. You have to walk before you can run and you may need to backtrack a little sometimes. If you feel overwhelmed, then break down your task into bite sized pieces. If you are starting a project, don't just launch in. Why don't you write a "contents page" If you get into the habit of writing a contents page for some of your bigger tasks or projects, it helps to break it down into more achievable objectives. You can then work on them one at a time but have an overall picture of where you are going. Don't tackle a steep slope all at once, work up it in degrees.

I guess a rough rule of thumb is, if it doesn't excite or challenge you then you need to go up a few degrees, if you feel overwhelmed, come back a few notches and break it down a bit more.

You will find breaking down any project or task into those bite size pieces will make it easier to achieve whatever you set out to achieve. If you are thinking about writing an post for your blog for example, list a series of steps, things you want to talk about in bullet points and then revise before you launch in to it. Look at the overall project and then break it down into its component parts. You should find it easier to write faster and with more ease.

Challenging but not overwhelming is the key.

4 Ways to Use Blogging to Drive Massive Traffic to Your Affiliate Promotion

By Jamie Holt

Although it is not a new trend, I still find that plenty of affiliate marketers overlook blogging as a form of affiliate promotion, and not only are they leaving money on the table like this but they are missing out on a practice that has the potential to really build credibility for your website. You see, blogs are loved by the search engines if you work at them and do things correctly, regularly updated content is something that will really hold you in a good position in the search engines and with that good position comes more traffic for your affiliate promotion, you can then use this extra traffic to test different offers and build your own credibility with your return visitors. A blog that is regularly added to with fresh content will always have people returning for more, so here are my blogging tips for you:

1. Set a schedule and stick to it If you can write once a day on your blog, then set that as your goal and stick to it, going over that is okay but what you do not want to do is to end up being too erratic with your posting, regular readers will convert to buyers if they have a reason to come back so make it worthwhile for them and be reliable as a source of information.

2. Do not promote too much Blogging for profits is a little bit like attraction marketing for your affiliate promotion, you don't need to push the sales too much because over time your credibility will build with your readers and they will be happy to make a purchase of products on your recommendation.

3. Think people first Tons of new bloggers focus their blogs too much on keyword targeted posts and they forget that human beings are to be reading their posts, as much as you want to rank well in the search engines, if you don't produce content that is human readable then any traffic you do get will be wasted and will leave as fast as they arrived.

4. Don't forget your end goal You may enjoy writing, and you may enjoy providing content for your readers, but if you are blogging for profits then your end goal should be to drive traffic to your affiliate promotion, or any of your offers so always keep this in mind when you are creating content for your blog. Follow these blogging tips will ensure that your blog is In a good position to drive traffic for you and increase your profits.

Game Design Blogs and Why They Are Necessary

By Fred McCoy

There are plenty of sites devoted to video gaming out there, a few of them very professional and are actual institutions. Game blogs can and will be done, there is no way to stop that, but why on Earth would they be necessary?

Most professional websites offer new, previews and opinions, but most importantly they offer reviews. These sites are consumer information sites. They are there to provide information to the consumer of what is coming out and if its worth their time. The news and previews are designed to increase hype and visibility of products. That is all well and good, but in the information age there is a noticeable difference between video games and mediums of old. Movies, novels and poetry were around before information was available instantly at the drop of a hat. One thing that video game lack is an actual critical look at games.

What choices did developers make in level design, story, mechanics, and/or concepts worked or did not work? These are done to an extent in reviews, but there is no look at why this is so. Commercial websites don't have the time to do this analysis. So we turn to the Blogosphere.

In other mediums people in the industry learn by viewing other people's work several times to see what can be done and then they could read up analysis on why it worked. Video games not so much because the average game is 5 to 6 times longer than the average movie and requires much more scrutiny than the written word. Also, modern video games comprise the visuals of movies, the possibilities of animation, the story telling of books, and also add in the gameplay mechanics of arcades. It isn't possible to note everything about a wide variety of games as it once used to be.

Creative design blogs are the way to go. You could liken them to the critical magazines when they were more well read way back. Thinking along those lines design blogs are the transition of content of what was once part of the print media to the digital one.

Fred McCoy is an avid video game critic who strongly suggests looking to Eric Swain for indepth articles on his game design blog.

By Ed Opperman

Millions of people have blogs and even more millions read them. They can be a fun and friendly way for you to keep an online diary, rant about politics or share your expertise or advice in a certain field.

But what happens when your blog attracts the attention of a stalker? Or worse. What happens if a stalker is so obsessed with you that they create an entire blog all about you just to cyber stalk, defame and harass you online?

It can be a nightmare that's what!

Thousands of people are finding themselves in that exact position. Some obsessed individual has targeted them and made them the focus of their disturbed online obsession.

They find out that some anonymous blogger is taking their words out of context, defaming their good reputation and causing great emotional distress in every way. The stalkers blog may even be impersonating them to purposely damage their reputation.

This can often escalate to real life stalking and harassment and even violence if left unchecked. The stalker can start sending their lies to your friends family coworkers or clients. This could ruin your personal and professional reputation.

If this is happening to you it's not something you can just ignore and hope it goes way.

First, what not to do.

Do not get into an online flame war with your stalker. They crave your attention.

It's Free - It's Fun - And it Can Make You Money! Get Blogging

By Andrew Charleson

Setting up a Blog is the easiest way to start your Online E-biz. Blogging can be free and you can have money rolling in from day one. How? Get started!

Just have a go! There are any number of free blogger sites. Just Google for them.

Use relevant keywords in the blog-title. If you want to have your blog indexed and listed by the search engines so that you can be found by people searching for your particular niche you can create a number of blogs with similar but different keywords or phrases linked to the same subject, and then link all the blogs together. So you will be covering more of the keywords that people will be searching for and you'll be improving the search engine ranking by creating back-links between the blogs. You can buy software programmes that claim to create large numbers of inter-linked blogs automatically so search engine spiders will be fooled into thinking your blog deserves a high page rank. Blogger sites and Search Engines like Google & Yahoo are aware of the latest software and tend to delete or ignore blogs they regard as trying to fool their indexing system. Only have as many inter-linked blogs as you can keep manually updated with genuine content and you won't have a problem.

Put affiliate links on your blog. Your visitors click through these links, buy the product or products you're promoting, and earn you a commission on every sale. You can add Google's ad sense code into your blog so that their adverts are displayed on your blog page and you get paid every time one of your visitors clicks through. This will not generate much money unless you're getting hundreds of thousands of visitors every day. Each click is only worth a few cents.

Use your blog as a list-building tool. You will need to link to your capture page where your visitors can give you their contact details. This page has to be hosted somewhere else and you will certainly have to spend more time, effort and money setting up an auto responder and a series of follow-up messages. You'll also need some kind of free gift to get people to give you their email address and name so there's the added work of creating or getting someone else to create a mini-ebook or email tuition course. However, in the long term, building a list of subscribers who've come to you through a blog that targeted their niche interest, must be the most profitable thing to use a blog for.

The best way to find out how to do it is just to get started with a free blog, and to learn the basics by simply having a go and getting the hang of it. It doesn't have to be perfect... and who knows, you might even enjoy it!

What Are Tags and How Are They Used?

By Matthew Glenn

Some people may not know what tags are and whether they're important or not. Well here is the long and short of it. Let's start off with the definition. Tags are a non-hierarchical keyword or term assigned to a piece of information, such as a blog entry. This kind of metadata helps describe an item and allows it to be found again by browsing or searching. Tags can be chosen by the creator or by its viewers, depending on the system of course.

Within a blog tags allow authors to add free-form tags to a post, along with (or instead of) placing the post into categories. For instance, a post may display that has been tagged with "concert and tickets". Each of those tags is usually a web link leading to an index page listing all of the posts associated with that tag. The blog may have a sidebar listing all the tags in use on that blog, with each tag leading to an index page. To reclassify a post, an author edits its list of tags. All connections between posts are automatically tracked and updated by the blog software; there is no need to relocate the within a complex hierarchy of categories.

So in layman's terms these tags can be used to find your article when the words you used to describe your article are typed in a search engine or within the blog search tool. Very simple concept but really needed when your looking to be notice. What's important here is to use descriptive words that shed light on the subject of your blog entry.

For example for this article I chose, blog, tags, how to, meta, spiders, SEO, and keywords. Tip: no matter where you use your tags blog, website, YouTube, if your not sure what one to use remember the internet is an open book, just look for an entry close to yours in subject to get some ideas.

WordPress WordCamp 2008

By Ed Grierson

WordCamp, Utah

September 27, 2008.

Matt Mullenweg, one of the founding developers of WordPress was the keynote speaker at Saturday's WordCamp event in Provo, Utah. His speech included a summary of WordPress developments this year and included a large list of what's next for the fast-growing, free blogging service.

The WordPress blogging service started with only 5 developers and 2 blogs. In the beginning the developers focused on building a system for friends who were not technical in order to help them join the web community. The goal was to develop something that was both simple and user friendly. Currently WordPress.com has about 4 million new posts and 6.5 billion page views per month. WordPress has had a strong development schedule which has continued to accelerate.

WordPress 2008 Year-in-Review

In 2007 there were 1090 commits made and so far in 2008 there are already 2840. WordPress has made 11 releases in the last year alone which is much higher than normal. The WordPress team also just added 3 new core developers increasing the development team back to five full time members. The upcoming WordPress 2.7 release is currently scheduled for November 2008.

In the year 2007 there were 2,849,349 downloads of WordPress tracked and in 2008 they have already surpassed 11 million downloads. This number does not include the number of downloads and installs from hosting companies which would significantly increase that number.

Combating Blog Spam

Over 5 billion spams were caught in the last year with 99.925% accuracy using the WordPress Akismet plugin. This shows that Akismet is staying very high on accuracy. There is a new type of spam that is now getting through due to spammers being very clever. They are starting to copy comments on other posts and change the URL referenced to gain a free link. Spammers are also paying people to go in and leave relevant comments and spam you with their links in them. The most common is spammers leaving kind remarks and compliments and having the webmaster approve the messages due to them feeling flattered by the positive remarks.

WordPress Mobility

Due to the website friendly nature of the iPhone and the success of the iPhone application (over 100k installs) WP is considering the creation of some new apps for other platforms as well including the blackberry and other mobile handsets.

WordPress Plugins

WordPress plans on improving their observance of plugin stats. Mullenweg mentioned there is a plan to watch the bottom 1000 plugins to find the new and upcoming trends. It is easier to see what is gaining fast popularity when monitoring the tail end of the plugins. He also mentioned the use of intelligent tails or the monitoring of the use of plugins and packages in order to gain valuable intelligence from the free market. Currently there are a huge number of features brought in via plugins. He mentions a few examples such as one that does real estate management and another that is an independent record label system.

Thoughts on PHP5

Matt Mullenweg predicted that PHP5 would fail early on due to its lack of major changes. He was wrong and fully admits it. PHP5 is now being used to host WordPress in 79% of WordPress installs. This means that when PHP4 usage falls below 10% or so they will pull the trigger and move ongoing development and support to PHP5 only. This will allow them to speed up and optimize the WP system.

The Future of WordPress - WordPress 2.7 Live Demo

Included during his speech was a live demo of WordPress 2.7. Version 2.7 is expected to be released sometime during November of 2008 and currently has 13,000 blogs testing it.

One of the key features of 2.7 will include a dashboard redesign. Mullenweg began by apologizing for a lack of tests regarding usability with a previous dashboard redesign. This time there is much more focus on ensuring that there won't be issues such as the large number of user complaints which came with the removal of the edit feature in comments.

Version 2.7 also introduces a number of major changes with one of the largest being the dashboard navigation being moved to the left hand side. This new navigation has expandable categories that can be viewed in real time when you click them (i.e. no waiting for the page to reload etc.) The right side of the default dashboard setup has a quick blog post and the center features an inbox. The dashboard still has stats and other dashboard features WordPress blog owners will be familiar with. The whole dashboard has been built in ajax which allows changes to be made on the fly. Users will therefore be able to, for example, drag a section in between columns to move stuff over and around as well as the ability to hide or show specific sections.

Other key changes include:

A new sticky posts feature which will allow bloggers to keep important or interesting posts at the top of their blog's homepage.

An insert media button has been added which allows for one click uploading of pictures, video, audio, etc. WordPress will automatically know what to do with the media uploads and will set them up appropriately.

Inline editing - you can see your actual blog and quickly edit tags, categories etc, or mass edit an entire batch of posts at once to add new tags etc.

Comments API - most commonly people edit comments and check stats, now you can moderate, approve, delete etc. and reply to comments via your mobile phone as well as the dashboard. Comments can now be threaded (you can enable it and have limits set etc.) which allows you to have conversations without the current hacks that people do to keep a conversation linear.

Keyboard Shortcuts introduced for moderating comments

Automatic plugin installation and upgrades via the browser. This includes the ability to search, upload, upgrade, install, and manage plugins from within the dashboard. It will also allow for one click installs for plugins that are in the WordPress.org library. Mullenweg also mentioned a goal of including this same feature for themes in the future (i.e. search, install, upgrade etc. all with a simple, intuitive interface).

Upgrades - one click installers built into the WordPress.org website.

Security is an increasingly important aspect of WordPress development. Currently there are over 20 US government entities using WP including: Air Force, Army CIA, Coast Guard, Department of Energy, Homeland Security, State Treasury, DEA, Marine Corps, FBI, National Security Agency, Navy, National Reconnaissance Agency, Geospatial Intelligence Agency, and the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Mullenweg also discussed what he considers to be upcoming blogging trends. The use of media, namely photo galleries and videos are going to become more main-stream in blogs. Additionally this includes bloggers making posts that can just be a comment, a video or some small item on its own, and the ability to include the media content inline with your post. This will allow WordPress become a more complete hub of information.

He continued to discuss WordPress as a hub noting that people's blogs will become their best possible social profile and they intend to make it so when you post something on another social site such as Twitter or YouTube it will work on WordPress. Of important note there he mentioned that your data will live on your blog and in your database so you don't have to worry if the other site goes down, you will still have all the data and stay in control. This hub system is a long term goal of their team.

BackPress is another system he discussed which will help show the underlying framework for WP and Theme Press, their user systems, internationalization, security systems, etc. making it easier for developers to make use of the WordPress base.

Another exciting development in the works is BuddyPress. This will allow users to have take a group such as a Boy Scout, church, or team and build a small "Facebook in a box" type of system in which you can have a full set of plugins and extensions that build a small social network with activities, profiles, interests, photos, groups etc. - all in a small private group. BuddyPress will allow small groups the ability to develop their own public or private social-networking site.

Mullenweg also discussed an improved feedback loop - trying to incorporate user feedback and testing earlier in the process of making updates. A core goal with this is the desire to incorporate more "normal" people in the process of development.

Mullenweg also mentioned how he feels that this is the year of themes. While everything used to be plugin driven, themes are really taking off with new automatic plugins built into them. They are being used for things such as a monotone theme which can make your site change the backgrounds to be complimentary to the photos you are updating.

What Else if Coming Up for WordPress?

Launching sometime in the near future will be WordPress.tv which will be a video site with screencasts that will show WordCamp videos including key speakers. This service will be searchable, include tags, and will also include HD video content.

Some Interesting WordPress Statistics

WordPress Usage Statistics:

5,671,649 WordPress.org Blogs - also includes WordPress.mu (multi-user version that hosts multiple blogs)

4,831,429 blogs on the system have run updates are now using the most up to date version.

WordPress Plugins

The average WordPress blog has 4.96 active plugins per blog.

No Time to Start an Internet Business Website? Create a Blog Instead - In About Five Minutes!

By Derek G.

When you think of the key factors that have helped drive the success of the Web, you think of the development of HTML and other programming languages that allow people to build ever more sophisticated websites, and the rapid advancement of the Internet search engines that let people find them. And then there's blogs.

A blog (derived from the term "web log") is basically just an Internet business website -- with three key differences:

  1. It's extremely easy to add information to it. A blog is like an online journal, so you just log in, type what happened today, post it, and you're done!
  2. You can add a simple little feature that automatically tells a whole bunch of other websites that you've made an update to your blog -- every time you make a change.
  3. There is a comments system common to most blogs that allows bloggers to have conversations with their readers by allowing visitors to post their own comments or views on the topic of discussion.

And used correctly, a blog is a powerful -- and versatile! -- business tool. Use a blog to quickly start an Internet business... reach a wider audience... generate better search engine rankings... boost your revenue by showcasing new products... develop relationships with your audience through open communication... build a community of interested followers... humanize your business and let your potential customers feel comfortable buying from you... and establish yourself as a leading expert in your industry.

And starting a blog couldn't be easier. In the next five minutes or so, you'll see for yourself just how easy it is to create a blog using Google's free blogging tool, Blogger...

  • Step 1: Create a Blogger account -- Follow the instructions from the title screen to create your own account. Don't worry; Blogger makes the process extremely simple. You'll need to give your blog a name at this stage (you can change these details later).

  • Step 2: Choose a template design -- Next, you'll need to choose a template from Blogger's selection. When it comes to the design of your blog, the layout should be easy to navigate, and the colors should be suitable for your subject matter. When you've become a more experienced blogger, you can create a blog with a customized template or use downloadable templates from sources like BlogSkins or Blogplates to help set your blog apart from others.

  • Step 3: Write your first post -- Next you need content! In Blogger's "Posting" screen, you can compose and manage your posts. For a first post, it's a good idea to introduce yourself and explain what your blog is all about. Then press "Publish Post," and you have a blog! And that took... what, five minutes?

  • Step 4: Add links -- You can also link to other blogs and encourage them to link back to you in return. Linking in this way is a great way to increase traffic to your blog. The key is to exchange links with blogs and websites that cater to your target audience -- but do NOT compete with your business. To add links to your blog, use the "Template" section in Blogger to edit your blog's template by adding and deleting links, changing your blog's colors, and so on.

Once you create your blog, the next step is to start adding content. But before writing that first post and launching your blog online, you need to determine what you want your blog to accomplish...

Do you want to use it to start an Internet business? Drive traffic to your existing sales website? Provide customer service or sales support tool incorporated into your existing website? Just keep your objective in mind as you create content for your blog. If your blog has a definite purpose from the start, and if you have a clear vision of what you want it to achieve, you'll find it much easier to come up with content and ensure that your blog stays focused.

Happy blogging!

By David H Hobson

If you've a web log that you're especially proud by, and that you would like to share it with others, theres a lot of costless ways that you are able to get your blog discovered.

Among those ways is something that you do day-after-day, and that you may not even conceive as a direction to share your web log. Put a link to your web log in your e-mail signature.

Probabilities are that you send e-mails more times than you are able to count throughout the day, for each time you send an e-mail, you can publicize your blog by placing the url of your blog in your e-mails signature.

It is always a great idea to compose something attention-getting like, See what I'm up to now, or scan my up-to-date chapter of my blog here, depending upon what type of web log you've got.

The thing to recall about placing an advertisement in your sig for your web log is to make it brief, but attention-getting.

You require people to be curious enough to want to visit your blog, but you in addition to do not want to frighten them off.

Exactly like it is with all advertisements, you would like to give them just enough that they will be fascinated and take a closer view what it is that you're publicizing.

Think of what it is that your web log is about. What is actually going to concern people about it and would like to visit that's what you should include in your sig, and that's what is getting people to go to your blog.

Whilst it's absorbing to merely read one's web log about their life story or past experiences, it's even finer to exit the web log having accumulated useful info about one topic or another.

Blog For the People Not the Money

By Corey R Geer

Do you currently own a blog or are you thinking about making a blog? If you've said yes to either question then you might need to know the following because I see so many starting web masters open up blogs and fail because they weren't thinking of one very simple concept that could have soared their profits sky high. They were blogging to make money online and they weren't doing it for the people.

What do you have if you have a professional looking website designed by the world's best website designer and you have a sales pitch written by the greatest make money online guru of all time but you have no traffic to this site? You have another space on the web and this is why most people shoot themselves in the foot. A great looking website or blog in this case, alone will not carry you to making money on the web because with a blog it's not about the money.

When people come to read a blog, they're coming for quality information. If you started out with one million subscribers via e-mail and you kept sending them ads of products, how long do you think they would stay on that list? Chances are you have their e-mail because they were interested in what you had to say and it was informative. When people start blogging just in the hopes of making money online, they steer away from the reason blogs are made in the first place.

Remember one very important and simple concept and that is that your blog is nothing without it's readers. I don't care who designs the blog and who writes it but the blog would be nothing without the readers. The traffic to your blog is the most important part because if it's not being seen by anyone then what purpose does it serve? You've got to have a direction and you have got to give people a reason for viewing your blog and to keep coming back or you'll end up with just another website on the web.

When people come to your blog, what's the first thing they see? Is it ad after ad after ad without any real reliable information? The average person will only skim a website a few seconds before he decided to stay or leave and in that first few seconds you need to grab the potential reader's attention and get him interested in what you have to say, because an informed reader is a potential customer in the blogging world.
