The word blog is a shorter form of the words "web" and "log" but these days, blogging software can be used to create any topic or subject of website you're interested in.
At a basic level, this blogging software creates an easy-to-use interface that allows publishers to create multiple pages under the same visual guidelines. The software also includes dynamic means of updating third-party software when new content is published. This is accomplished through what is known as RSS feeds, pings, and trackbacks.
However, there is a bias among some that blogs are just personal websites, literally web-logs of an individuals private life. Some people imagine that typical posts are only about last night's dinner, pictures of the latest family pet, or just a rant about work. Of course, such personal blogs are still popular - and they provide a great way for individuals to keep in touch with friends and family. But this isn't the only type of blog that can be written - and these days, they are shrinking in terms of relative share.
Some of the fastest growing websites in today's blog-o-sphere are about video games, Hollywood entertainment, political elections, and of course - the economy. These blogs create a place on the internet where professionals and interested enthusiasts can debate the latest subjects of interest and intrigue around the world. Blogging about a subject or even just participating in such blogs can even help individuals learn about any topic they want to know more about.
So if someone says that they have a blog, don't assume it is just for family reunion photos and news about the next office scandal at a corporation you don't work for. Blogs can be written about any subject you can imagine - and if there is anything that hasn't been blogged about yet you could probably make some easy money by being the first one to do it.
