Blog Income - A Great Idea For a Blogging Web Site is No Longer Enough

By Ernie Carroll

It seems that everyone with internet access today, are putting up there own blog or blogs, whether it be for their own pleasure or to earn an income. Because there are so many blogs floating around on the internet, it can be tough to distinguish your blog from all of the others that are out there.

Every great blog starts with a great idea, and you can't build a successful blog that will last without one. To make your blog stand out from the rest, you will need to offer something that no other site is currently offering, or you will need to do the same thing that an already popular site does but in a more impressive or valuable way.

If you are planning on starting a blog, the key to building and maintaining a blog that will capture and hold the interest and attention of the blogging community is finding a niche. It used to be said to just start a blog on a subject that you are good at, but that doesn't necessarily hold true in todays blogging world, especially if you are planning on earning an income from your blog. The reason being, most blogs are about broad generic subjects and they have pretty much saturated the internet, making it very difficult to get any blog exposure.

To find a niche that will be able to compete, you must do some extensive research. One place you can do your research is Yahoo Answers. Go see what questions people are asking the most and in what niche they are in.Try to look for a niche that is unique, or different to what everyone else is blogging about. Maybe you will dig up a goldmine!

Next you will need to monetize your blog. Some good ways to do this is with affiliate products, AdSense, eBay auction, and Amazon. There are many more options that are also available.

The most important thing to remember now is to just get started!

4 Things I Like About Blogging to the Bank 3

By Aminuddin Sharifudin

Is the Blogging to the Bank 3 a worthwhile investment? This is the latest ebook written by Rob Benwell, aiming at improving some of the strategies that are not effective today as they were before. Personally, I feel Rob has done a great job, and all his latest techniques are interesting and can be applied easily. Thus, I would like to share 4 things I like about Blogging to the Bank 3.

Firstly, the ebook is solid, full of information regarding a lot of different techniques that can be applied to monetize your blogs. Rob does utilize the 50 pages efficiently. I am really impressed with his job.

Secondly, Blogging to the Bank 3 emphasizes on email list building from your blog. I find this really fascinating because the real money is really in your mailing list. Those subscribers will most likely be your future customers. Therefore, maintaining your email list means securing your future profit.

Thirdly, Rob highly recommends affiliate marketing as one of the means in making money through blogging. To me, that is a brilliant suggestion. Affiliate marketing does get my highest recommendation as well. The combination of blogging and affiliate marketing is really the key. Those who are about to start online business might want to consider this.

Lastly, Blogging to the Bank 3 encourages readers to focus on Clickbank as the main source of affiliate products. There are two main reasons why I strongly agree with Rob. First of all, Clickbank is the largest online retail outlet and affiliates will have lots of options to select from, especially in selecting their niches. In addition, hot and new Clickbank products can be easily identified as there are ready tools available for the affiliates. For instance, I am using Wealthy Affiliate's Clickbank Research tool to find hot products that have just been released.

In short, I believe that Blogging to the Bank 3 will be a great resource for those who are interested in making money online. I am really a fan of Rob's ebook because it emphasizes the combination of blogging and affiliate marketing. For those who are looking for online business opportunities, Blogging to the Bank 3 would be a great start. Therefore, I highly recommend this ebook to all.

Blog Success - Your Blog's Focus

By Ted Demopoulos

In order to have a successful blog, it's important for your blog to have focus. You can't blog effectively on several unrelated topics in the same blog and expect to have many readers. It's unlikely that many potential readers will share your mix of passions -- a blog must focus on only one topic for maximum success.

Let me give you an example. I have a friend Jacque who is a born-again Christian and a passionate gambler. He lives for Jesus and he loves to gamble. He certainly doesn't have any problems with either. He can carry on a discussion without mentioning Jesus in every other sentence. He also doesn't have any problems with gambling. He is not out of control; he's just really into sports and likes to bet on sports. He spends far less than many other people do on their hobbies.

If he were to blog on religion and gambling, it probably wouldn't work very well. He couldn't build a really large readership. There are not a lot of people that are into both and also people involved in one may tend to not like the other. A similar issue is when someone blogs on their business, whatever it is they do that they are hopefully passionate about, and they blog on too many miscellaneous topics or perhaps too many personal details.

Now you certainly can go off topic sometimes.

Recently I adopted a little girl from Russia and you can bet I posted a picture on all my blogs and said, "Hey, I just adopted this wonderful little girl from Russia." However you are not going to read about my personal life every week. If I suddenly have a cold or a sinus infection, I am not going to blog about it, not in a business blog

If you already have a large following, you may be able to go off topic more often if you are still providing lots of content in your core focus.

For example, Bruce Schneier is a very popular blogger on security. He decided that every Friday he would blog about squid. Squid doesn't stand for anything technical in this case: just squid the animal, the creature swimming in the ocean. He didn't cut down on his normal posting. He still posted as much information on his normal topic, security, but he thought it was kind of interesting to blog on something entirely unrelated. He just posted something about squid every Friday. It didn't affect his popularity although there was a lot of talk and comments about it, but it didn't cut down on his readership.

Now Bruce may be a slightly special case, because he is such a popular blogger, but pretty much the same rules would apply regardless. He kept blogging just as much on his main topic as always and just inserted something kind of fun every Friday. It seems to workout fairly well for him.

In general you should stick to your topic. If you want to blog on all kinds of miscellaneous things, you can always start a personal blog in addition to your business blog.

Get Results From Forum Marketing With This Guide

By Goh Wei Liang

What Is Forum Marketing

As the name suggests, forum marketing is a way of gaining traffic from the forums by contributing to the content. There are so many forums available online covering any topics that you can think off. But to think of it, if you stumble across any topics that are not covered by any forums, do let me know (if you know what I mean).

Common Mistakes In Forum Marketing

1) Spamming

There are thousands of people who know that forums are a good channel to drive traffic and focus their attention on it. As a result, they spam the forums with zero value comments and posts. Forum marketing is about quality content rather than quantity count.

2) Not using eye-catching forum signature

Forum signature is an area where you can display text or links of your choice. This is the link you want the forum readers to click which will lead back to your blog. But often, I see casually written signature display on it which doesn't create any urge for the forum readers to click on it.

Achieve This Before Linking To Your Blog

As a rule of thumb, try getting up to 50 posts first before even recommending people to read your blog. Always give before thinking of receiving. Avoid being seen as a spammer by forum members as it will hurt your credibility in the long run. In most cases that I have seen, the easiest way to get banned by a forum is to start posting links to your website on your very first post and this is what I don't want it to happen to you.

Post 1 unique entry on your blog and put it as your forum signature. This increases the chances of forum members clicking on your link. Make the link description as compelling as possible.

Leveraging From Forums

My advice is to concentrate on 1-2 forums by posting regular comments as well as articles for better results. Find threads that you can add valuable comments on it and do it everyday. Build up your forum profile and you can easily leverage from it. Alternatively, you can start a new thread to share on your experiences of the topic and at the same time provide a lesson for the forum members to learn from your story.

Participate in forums that have active members and fresh threads are being created everyday to discuss on different questions. In this way, you are exposing your content and at the same time being more productive when you leave comments on the thread.

Tips To Improve Forum Marketing

1) Use compelling forum signature

There are simply too many signature links in a forum and how do you make yours attractive for the forum members to click on it? You can use my technique by creating a unique article and post it on your blog. Include the article link on your forum signature to drive traffic to your blog.

2) Use real name

You should be trying to get your name out to your topic market as much as possible and thus using your real name in the forum is a must. You notice that I am trying very hard to tell you to build up your credibility because we are living in a cruel world.

People only follow and believe what you say after you have carved a name for yourself. They will then be all out to get your attention because they hope to get some benefit out from you. I know everyone goes through the same process but shorten the time frame needed to build your credibility online.

3) Post only constructive comments and articles

Contribute only when you can add to the value. Do not post for the sake of increasing your post count in the forum. I need to stress on the importance of quality in forum marketing because there are simply tons of competition in it.

Travel Writer's Secret to Making Money From an Ad-Free Blog

By Rebecca Ann

Travel writer David's first blog was an ad free blog. Some people thought he was crazy for not monetizing his blog. As a travel writer, he knew he could make money from his writing. Through his research he found great blogs on the internet that did not run ads. He found out that some ads can actually make you lose money! The most important discovery was finding out that he could make a decent income without running ads on his blog.

Would you like to know the travel writer's secret to making money from an ad-free travel writing blog? Keep reading to find out how it's done!

According to an article on the blog Lost Art of Blogging: "I've waited about 6 months for my first adsense check a few years back, when I first started blogging. Yeah, 6 months for a meager 100$. Don't forget it's a lot harder now, as opposed to, let's say, 2-3 years back. I've heard a lot of people saying they've waited as much as 12 months for their adsense to cash in. Let's look at the CPM model, too. At a normal CPM rate of 1$ per thousand impression, a blogger would need about 100k hits per month to make 100$, which, let's face it, is both not much at all and hard to achieve. A normal mid-trafficked blog has a few thousand impressions per day, working pass that requires a heck of a lot of work. Yeah, you can add multiple banners (leaderboards, skyscrapers, blocks etc.), but in the process you may risk over-flooding your blog with commercial ads."

First, sign up with WordPress.com or Blogger for a FREE blog. Once you start blogging you will develop credibility for your niche travel market. If your blog is loaded with advertising, readers may question who you are writing for. Are you writing to educate and provide useful travel information to your readers? They may get the "feeling that you're writing for the advertisers that are on your blog.

A blog is a great way to market your travel writing ability. You can make a page, call it Portfolio, and showcase your work. All you have to do is "pdf" your work or the alternative is to create a page for ebooks, travel guides, or magazine travel articles.

If you have a website dedicated to budget travel and your website receives a ton of traffic, consider writing an eBook. After all, you're expert on the subject and your readers know it. When you are finished writing and proofing your eBook, sell it on your website.

Another ad-free technique is to ask for donations. Some travel writers may think this is "crazy talk," but many people ask for donations to keep their blogs up and running. Appeal to your readers senses and if they appreciate your work they'll be happy to help you out financially so you can keep your blog online. Check out Paypal, sign up today, and earn money tomorrow!

In conclusion, an ad-free blog can make you money. Your blog will be clean and fresh with pertinent travel information that your readers want to read. A focused reader is a happy reader who will be back for more!

Our website is dedicated to aspiring and experienced travel writers. You'll discover motivation, inspiration, and education on travel writing. Join our forum and converse with other travel writers. Blog Success - Your Blog Goals

By Ted Demopoulos

In order to have a successful blog, it's important to have blogging goals.

What are your goals with blogging? If you don't have any goals, how can you know if you're succeeding, if your blog is working?

Ask yourself where do you want to end up with blogging? You are never going to get there if there isn't any "there." How do you know you've achieved your goals if you don't have them?

I suggest going beyond merely listing goals and choosing a primary goal. Your primary goal may certainly shift over time, as may all your goals.

Goals for a business blog might include establishing thought leadership, engaging customers in dialogue -- Microsoft has been extremely effective in that with their 4,000 plus bloggers, increasing awareness of your company and its offerings, or perhaps just becoming a better writer -- writing is a critical business skill.

For example, my primary goal with my first blog was simply to experiment and become familiar with blogs and blogging. Once that was accomplished, my primary goal became to reposition myself as a consultant. Traditionally, I was a technical guy and many of my older clients used me for my technical acumen only. However I'd been in business for myself for a good 15 years including a number of startups and a lot of consulting, and I learned quite a bit about business. Some of my newer clients used me for my business acumen. I used my blog to help position myself as a consultant with a lot of business experience and a strong technical background.

I strongly suggest you write down your blogging goals, preferably on paper! Schedule a review date on your calendar a few months out and revisit your blog goals then.

Have you made progress towards achieving them? Has your primary goal shifted?

Just the simple practice of documenting your blogging goals and periodically reviewing them can have an enormous impact on the success of your blog.

How To Create A Boating Blog - Great Way To Express Your Passion

By Abhishek Agarwal

If you love boating and have a passion about it, you can let other people know about it through a boating blog. A blog is a great way to interact with the world. You can write anything you want in your blog. You can give boating tips, pictures from trips that you have made or just talk about all of your boating expeditions.

The first thing you need is a blog host. There are many available websites out there for bloggers. The two most popular places you can find blogs are on Wordpress (wordpress.org) and Blogger (blogger.com). Both blog sites are free. If you want a built-in network, you can create a MySpace account and use the blog feature on the social network site.

If you want something more than a blog, create a website. Hosting a site isn't difficult. You can find some websites that are free, but they have many advertisers on their site. You can also get a website for cheap on the Internet. This is easy to do, but blogs are the easier of the two options.

Once you get the blog started, think of a title you want for the blog. Try to think of something creative because 'My Boating Blog' isn't going to cut it. Once you have the title down, you have to introduce yourself. You don't need to give your full name because there should be some information that is left confidential. Talk about why you love boating so this way people will be able to get a connection with you and understand your passion about boating.

Pictures are a great way to add to your blog. Take pictures of your boat and add pictures of your boating trips. You can give a bio for your boat. Talk about its features and the name of your boat. Describe how you got the boat and if you named the boat, how you got the name of the boat.

The point of your blog is to talk about boating. So put down anything you want. This is your blog and there isn't anything that you can?t talk about. You are in charge of what is put on the blog. If you want to talk about safety issues, then do it. If you want to talk about your fishing tales, you can do that too. There is no stopping you when it comes to talking about boats on your blog.

If you want people to contact you, include an email link. However, if you don't want anyone getting in touch with you, don't include any contact information on your blog. The way people can interact with you is through comments on the posts of the blogs.

Why Web 2.0 is Like SEO on Steroids

By Terry Philpott

To claim web 2.0 can be considered SEO on steroids would first require an exclamation as to what exactly is web 2.0. Over the recent past there's been a silent revolution taking place regarding the fundamental design and functionality of many popular web sites.

Formally the general structures of most online sites allow the visitor little or no ability to actually interact with the site itself much beyond leaving a name, email address, or some such other form of id. They were limited to the role of mere spectators with little or no say regarding site content, layout, or format.

The internet identified the need to expand communication channels between users and sites inducing a more interactive feel into the fabric of the web itself. This evolution was initiated by sites such as Amazon, which allowed its users to post product reviews allowing others to read.

Blogs are another example of Web 2.0. The ability for visitors and site owners to interact thru user comments and site owner responses have enhance the experience for both. Users have gained more influence over the site content.

Now we have video sites such as YouTube allowing users to upload their own videos for the entire internet to see and even rate. From there the list grows with other 'user oriented' sites such as Technorati, Digg, or Flikr. The emergence of social networking sites like MySpace, FaceBook, or Tweeter, to name a few, have helped accelerate the growth and popularity of interactive online sites.

Now how does all this relate to search engine optimization or for that matter how could it enhance SEO efforts for online marketers?

First you must consider how web 2.0 can be used to generate traffic for any online business.

Traditionally article submissions have been considered a great way to gain back links to your website benefiting your search engine rankings while also generating traffic for you. This process typically takes weeks or longer. On the other hand if you were to post this article on a web 2.0 site such as Digg and it was popular enough to appear on the main page you could conceivably receive tens or hundreds of thousands of visitors within the day. Additionally you would also have such a highly ranked site like Digg now linked to your site giving your search engine rankings a boost.

Other sites such as FaceBook, Squidoo, YouTube, or even blogs can give you the same lightning quick results utilizing their varying characteristics to get quickly indexed, recognized, and generate hordes of traffic for you.

Like the organic traffic you get from the more traditional means of search engine optimization, traffic from web 2.0 sites is also FREE.

All things considered, the traffic and the improved search engine rankings you get from web 2.0 type sites can be considered to be more like SEO on steroids. Are you ready to put your online business into overdrive while getting a little more interactive with other participants of the internet community?

Building a Blog Network

By Shannon Herod

Blogging is a great way to earn a massive income. But, unfortunately it is hard to earn a great income with one single blog. There is an answer for that though. Building a blog network is a great way to earn a living online. A blog network is simply multiple blogs within multiple niches with one common purpose... To earn you money.

A blog network is relatively easy to set up. Use WordPress as the platform to make sure that you get the best experience possible. Plus, it is easier to set up with WordPress in my opinion. Not to mention, WordPress is highly recommended by most successful bloggers.

I would start out with one blog and move your way up. Once you have the one blog up and running with traffic coming in that is when I would start to focus on the second. Once a second blog is up and running with traffic coming in start working on the third. Then keep on going until you are earning the type of money that you would like to learn.

There are three critical components when it comes to managing your blog network. Those three components are content, traffic and conversions. Without content, traffic or conversion your blog network will not be successful. Obviously you need content for the visitor to read, traffic so the content is read and conversions to start to make money. Without one of these three critical components firing on all cylinders your blog network will suffer. You need to make sure all three of these components are working together at all times.

Unfortunately, there are a few downfalls when it comes to owning a blog network. Managing multiple blogs can become a nightmare. Logging in and out of different sites and moving from blog to blog can become mundane and boring. Fortunately, there is an answer. There is a service that makes managing a multiple blog network relatively easy. That service called Firepow. Firepow allows you to produce content, manage your blog and promote it with ease.

Write, Then Write Again, and Finally Write More

By Robin Rushlo

How do you get the word out about your product or service? Is it Coffee, Vitamins, Energy Drinks or your Radio Show? How do you let everyone know this great idea you have? Do you have the next big network Marketing Item? Are you the only Network Marketing company with Coffee? How do you discuss an event in your life? The launch of something new, updated blogs, or articles? The New House or new position in a company? By writing! There are lots of places on the internet to write that will give you access to hundreds or thousands of people.

One thing you can do is write articles like this one. There are literally hundreds of places that will post original articles and many of them will post them for free. These virtual magazines offer content on virtually any subject. For a small fee you can pay a service to post the articles for you with hundreds of these virtual magazines. This gives you a big bang for you buck since each of these posting have the potential of reaching different people. A word of caution: many of these sites have strict rules about posting. Often there are restrictions as far as what you can put in an article. Also many of them put articles through a review process which can take several days.

Blogging is another great way to communicate in the virtual world. Blogs can be about almost anything. Blogging sites are usually less restrictive than virtual magazines sites. Generally blogs can be shorter and have more personal information than is sometimes allowed with a virtual magazine. If you do a web search for "starting a blog" you will get lot of articles about how to blog as well as places where you can start a blog.

The bottom is that you shouldn't let this opportunity to communicate with potential customers, collaborators, or even just friends pass you by. You have to start somewhere. For those who nervous about writing, starting with blogging is probably the best. It is easy to set up and does not have to be structured in any way. From there you can start writing longer, more structured pieces. Write about something that interests you. Write about something that happened in your life that made a profound difference in the path you took. Write about something you would like to do. Basically it doesn't matter what you write about as long as you enjoy the process!

The Basics to Successful Blogging

By Raymond Tsai

Are you someone who is struggling to get traffic to your blog? Well you are not alone, as driving traffic to your blog is the number one thing that people want to accomplish - Not to mention that even some veterans find their readership diminish as time flies by.

Well how do you drive easy traffic?

The concept is simple- get your readers to advertise it for you! When a blogger writes something that his or her readers find to be useful and worth sharing, it's not uncommon for some of those readers to link to the post on their own blogs, or send it to friends whom they feel could benefit from reading it too!

Become attached with your audience.

Get to know your readers, and allow them to get to know you as well. Because we all know that readers' thoughts, opinions, and stories not only define who we are, but it represents us as a whole. Therefore building a firm connection with your audience is very important, as when a blogger develops a bond with his or her readers, they are much more inclined to recommend your blog to others.

Provide great content on a regular basis.

I believe one of the best strategies for writing a great post is to first establish a problem and then provide solutions, as this will develop into a little Q&A blog that provides information on what people are looking for. Your readers will then come to recognize your ability to help them with some of the problems they may have, and if your solutions produce great results, they'll often return, or perhaps recommend your articles to others who may be facing those same problems you helped solve.

Keep in mind, you need to have a loyal audience in order for the word to spread from person to person, and this typically does not happen with a new blog. Other methods of promotion are usually required to get the ball rolling, and must be adapted for several months before your blog can go viral. This is not always the case, but is a very common trend amongst successful blogs. Like a business, you must develop a strong brand and good reputation, and play an active role in your niche community.

How to Monetize Your Online Blog Or Website

By Paul Guzman

Much has been written about making money online. I get hundreds of visitors asking me what is the easiest and most profitable way to make money using my computer.

This is what I tell them use your own knowledge to profit. Yes... it really is that simple. Most folks are looking for the super easy quick fast buck. If you are lucky you might find a program that might make you money fast but I guarantee you will not get rich overnight. However if you are looking for the easiest way to monetize your online blog or website you might want try Google's AdSense program.

Now days you have a plethora of blogs, websites, forums, Social Websites and programs that can help you make money with AdSense. This is especially true if you are a complete beginner. You can use bloggerdotcom to make a blog about whatever your heart desires. Add your AdSense code to your blog and you will make money. It does not cost one red cent to start a blog.

You will have to bring some visitors to your blog and the best way to do this is by familiarizing yourself with SEO which is search engine optimization. It basically means adding your keywords in the blog name the title and several time throughout your blog. Here is an example: You want to start a blog about video games. Try naming you blog "my-video-game-blog". The title of your first post should be about... you guessed it "My Video Game blog". You will be surprised with the results.

Another way to get traffic to your blog is to write articles about video games. If you are just remotely familiar with your niche subject it should be easy to write articles and then submit them to the article directories. Once you start getting a little traffic from the search engines specifically Google visitors they will visit your blog and you will start generating an income.

Here is another good tip about Google's AdSense program. Make your AdSense code the same theme as your blog.

Robotic Marketing - How to Repurpose Teleseminars Into Blog Posts

By Pat Shanks

A typical blog post may be 500-1,000 words. Therefore, you can have many blog posts from a teleseminar -- at least a dozen or sometimes even 24 blog posts from one teleseminar.

How do you do it?

Always record your teleseminars. That's the first place to start for repurposing your content.

You can turn that into an e-book, a mini e-course, a CD, a podcast, or a blog post. A recording from a teleseminar can be the hub of a wheel, with lots of spokes coming off from there.

Have that recording transcribed. Have the transcription chopped up and you or your editor decide how many blog posts will be posted.

Post With Your Mouth

You can post with your mouth, not with your hands. Post with your mouth, because you've already spoken the words. Isn't the 'Gettysburg Address' a transcription? Lincoln isn't alive any longer. He's not giving that speech. That was the original from the spoken word. There were no teleseminars then.

It was transcribed into the written word whether on a scroll, a sheet of paper, a PDF, a website -- there are all different types of into tactics or versions of repurposing, but it started with the audio or spoken word by Abraham Lincoln.

So repurpose many blog posts from one teleseminar. Why create blog posts when you can re-create and repurpose them through the spoken word from one teleseminar?

Every time you have a teleseminar, celebrate and think of how many spokes you have. You have one hub of content, but how many spokes are connected? There are a ton. So remember to begin with the end in mind.

Writing Product Reviews For Your Blog

By Marian Krajcovic

If one of the big reasons you have a blog is to make money, then consider writing and posting product reviews. Product reviews are just what they sound like; a thorough review of a product - physical or digital. Your blog can go one of two ways - consist of only product reviews, or product reviews can be listed on a separate page or under their own topic heading on your blog.

The reason you should be interested in doing product reviews lies in the blue, underlined line of writing inside and at the bottom of your review. That link is your meal ticket because it's your affiliate link to the product. If a person clicks through it and buys the product, you get the affiliate commission.

If your blog is all product reviews, then you are aiming to be an authority site on the products in your niche. For example, if your niche is dog training, you can post in-depth and thorough reviews of each dog training program that is currently being sold in the marketplace.

This is a good way to go if you remember to use keywords in your reviews and in the titles of the reviews. People who are looking to buy will want to read some reviews first and if they like what you have to say, they may end up buying through you. These product reviews should sound as unbiased as possible; pointing out the pros, as well as a few cons, of the product.

A product review should be longer than an average post, but make sure you keep the paragraphs short with plenty of white spaces for easy viewing/skimming. Use bullet points and subtitles in bold for a nice look. If you do a lot of product reviews, it would be helpful for you and your readers to set up a template for you to follow with each review.

It might look like:

· Heading

· Description

· Pictures(s) of the product

· Specifications (computer requirements or tools needed to put together, etc.)

· Pros

· Cons

· Feedback or testimonials

· Comparisons with other similar products

· Rating

If your product reviews are only a part of your blog, I recommend that you don't do them too often. Perhaps have a product review after every 5th- 7th post, depending on how often you post. These reviews don't have to follow the above template, they can actually be more personal. The best review is the one where you have tried the product yourself and can report your results. Again, you do need to report any problems with the product to retain your credibility.

Posting product reviews on your blog is an excellent way to earn affiliate income. Take time to create and perfect a review template if you do a lot of reviews, and always remember to make your reviews look attractive and sound sincere.

What? You Have to Be a Psychologist to Blog?

By Maggie Lancy

Did you know that there are over 70 million blogs on the internet. Most people start a blog for two reasons, they want to voice their opinion and they want to use the blog to make money. There is no doubt that blogging is an exceptional way for you to create your presence on the internet and become a force to be reckoned with, if you go about it correctly.

Believe it or not, there is a correct way to blog, see there is a psychology to it, so to speak. You have to be able to roll with what the internet world is going to throw at you, in other words, be prepared for the ups and downs. Your success is dependent upon your longevity. I want to make sure you succeed, so to help you I am going to give you priceless advice that will help your blog and create the presence you are after.

First and foremost, you have to be patient. Understand that the ranking systems such as Google and Alexa are not going to rank your blog on day one, and they aren't going to index you each and everyday from the get go. That is unless you have the bank roll to back up the blog so that you can advertise like crazy. Guess what? , most of us do not have the cash to do that! So you are in the same boat as 90% of the other bloggers out there.

The second tip is to let go of the need to be perfect. Perfectionism is the number one killer of blogs. You are going to look back at your first posts a year from now and roll your eyes! You may think now that they are very insightful and witty, great! publish them. Once you reread them a year from now, you can edit if you want. Understand that the key to fliiping the switch on the computer so that your blog makes money has less to do with being perfect and more to do with being seen! Few people out there can identify with being perfect.

Next you are going to want to embrace your failures. This is important, the only way to learn from your mistakes and imporve is to make mistakes. You are going to mess up, we all do!, the difference is that you have to seize that opportunity as a tool and use it to imporve what you are doing.

The fifth tip that I am going to offer you is to get a thick skin, and the sooner you do that the better. Face the fact right now that you are not going to make every person out there happy with what you have to say. Not everyone going to agree with you, and not everyone is going to be nice about it. Also understand that the more successful you get the more you are going to have people try and knock you down. Think of yourself as Mt Everest, no matter what anyone does to Mt Everest it does not fall. When people are trying to knock you down they are doing so because you are there. It isn't really personal against you it is more envy on their part.

Finally stay focused. Don't forget why you started your blog. While your goals may change, your opinion may change, why you went into blogging will not. It was to create online presence, brand your name, make money, help and educate people. Follow these simple steps and you and your blog will be successful!

I Am Blogging About the Hobbies That Make Me More Money Online

By James Mann

It's amazing how hard we will work to make money online, well if we don't know an easier way that is. Personally I worked my butt off 7 days a week and even then I wasn't making a full time living on the internet but once I realized I could make money online blogging about things I love, my hobbies, my entire online focus changed. It was like I was in heaven.

I tried blogging previously but it didn't seem to work for me but later I realized it wasn't the blogging that wasn't working it was the topics I had been choosing. I even forgot about blogging for a couple of years and continued doing the same thing I had been doing since early 2001.

I eventually decided to start a blog to share what I have learned over the years about fishing, fly fishing specifically. That is when the lights started to come on and they got brighter and brighter as the months of sharing when by.

I didn't do any advertising on this blog as it was jut an outlet for me to share my love of fly fishing.

I Was Finally Making Money Online

After about 3 months of sharing I noticed my traffic was up over 100 unique visitors a day and I was getting all kinds of keywords showing up in my cPanel stats. That's when I added a little bit of advertising.

I started out slow as I didn't want to turn off my new readers but over the following months I added more advertising. I added 3 adblocks that were 125x125 banners. I got them from Commission Junction and they were links to fishing supplies.

Next I added inline ads from Kontera. I will admit that Kontera doesn't make me a lot of money on one blog but when you add up all my blogs it's nothing to sneeze at. It also has to do with the growth of my blogs. Most of them are still less than a year old.

Well my fishing blog was working so well that I decided to start another blog but this time I went for gardening as my wife and I had just bought a new home with a second lot so we could start gardening. I figured I may as well share what I was learning and in that way others could help us learn by sharing through comments.

A few months after my first gardening blog started it was earning money for us as well.

Now I have 3 gardening blogs and 4 fishing blogs.

We are baby boomers ready for retirement and we love to travel. Well I decided to start a travel site where we would share our travel experiences. I didn't expect it to do much until we retired and started traveling more but it just took off and now it's the blog I make the most from.

The funny part about our travel blog is that I haven't shared any of our experiences yet. I have only put up private label rights articles that I purchased online. People just started requesting ad space on our travel blog and it just keeps getting better. I now have 4 travel blogs making money for us.

So in my humble opinion blogging is a most awesome way to make a living on the internet these days. The posts can be short so there is never a problem adding content and they seem to get indexed really fast as the search engines love blogs.

Should I Pay For My Blog?

By Ed Grierson

When starting your blog it is important to first determine what the purpose of the blog is. If your blog is for nothing more than personal joy, or perhaps a place to share thoughts with a select number of individuals, then a free blog is perfectly acceptable. On the other hand, if your blog has aims at making money or perhaps feeding information to a larger number of people perhaps it's time to consider investing a little money to maximize your blog's effective reach.

If your blog fits into the second category, and you want to increase both its reach and its ability to better serve your users then you can't afford not to make the small investments necessary. Doing so costs very little and only takes two small steps:

Step 1: The first inexpensive, but extremely valuable purchase would be a personal domain name. Nothing separates your blog from the thousands of others like it's own home on the internet. No longer will it be perceived as simply a common blog, but now it's an official home for the information you are sharing. This relationship change occurs on both a conscious and subconscious level to your users. Instead of being bobsblog.blogx.com you can have something personal like makemillionstoday.com - all for just a few dollars a year.

There are a number of options for purchasing your own domain name and they start as cheap as a couple of dollars and peak out around $20 dollars. While the cheapest option may sometimes seem the best that isn't always the case. There are also options with many hosting companies to purchase a domain name, or even get one for free when you purchase a hosting plan. Be sure to research a bit about the registrar you are going to use and make sure you will actually own the domain name. Some registrars will trick you into "buying" a domain name but then maintain the rights to it and will be able to prevent you from taking that domain name with you if you wish to leave their service.

Step 2: The next big question is do you need a hosting plan? Having a paid host offers a lot of benefits to your blog. While the free host or blog site definitely is economical it often has a limited amount of features and your ability to expand your blog into a more fully developed site will definitely be limited. Whereas if you choose to go with a paid hosting plan, which can come as cheap as a few dollars a month, you open up an entirely new book of options.

Many good web hosts offer both one click blog installations as well as email lists, web forums, shopping carts, and dozens of other useful features which can make your blog a better and more productive experience for your users. Have you ever wanted to sell customized t-shirts or coffee mugs on your blog? With the proper hosting plan this could be a simple process! Having a hosting plan will also allow you to install many of the widgets, or plugins, that are available to most of the major blogging systems.

Conclusion

When we get down to the nitty-gritty the real question is can you afford not to upgrade your blog? If you're serious about your blog it is becoming paramount to invest in it by getting a personalized domain and increasing your ability to offer your users what they want and need. Doing so will increase your reach and give you a the potential to turn your blog into the career you've always wanted.

How to Increase Blog Traffic

By Ed Grierson

These days everyone has a blog but most of them float unread out on the internet cloud. So the big question I keep hearing is how do I get more traffic to my blog? The answer is simple, and if you are willing to put in a little time you can do it for free as well.

Blogs are more or less just like any other website out there. Sure they are designed to make it easy for bloggers to post news, images, and video without much computer savvy but in reality they are just user friendly mini-websites. So now that you have one you want to get more traffic to it so here's a few of the free and basic first steps to increasing your blogs traffic.

#1 Blog About Something People Care About

Seriously - if nobody cares about your blog because it's just random talk about what you ate that morning you aren't going to pick up a lot of traffic. However, regardless of how weird your interests may be someone out there also cares about them. So this one is an easy - just blog about something that someone else can relate to.

#2 Submit Your Blog to Directories

This one is also easy but takes a bit of time. There are a lot of free services out there where you can submit your blog to. They are basically like giant phonebooks for blogs and once you add your blog to their service more people will be able to find your blog. You'll be able to categorize your blog and many of them let you use your own "tags" which are basically key words. Just jump on your favorite search engine and type in something like "free blog submission" and you'll find lots of sites which can help you out.

#3 Have a Blogroll

Blogs often have a list of links somewhere that lists the other blogs or websites that are related or that the blogger enjoys visiting. If you want to help increase traffic find some sites that will trade you a link on their blog for one on yours. Don't get too carried away with this though as you can actually lose traffic if you abuse this. This is where you start to get into the internet's deeper and more inner workings so for brevity we'll just leave it with this: you don't want more than about 100 links on your front page or you might actually decrease your chance for big traffic.

#4 Submit Your Blog to Feedreaders

Most blog services have the ability to create a "feed". You might hear people talking about RSS, syndication, or feedreaders. Basically what this means is each blog creates a list of what posts have been added to it much like headlines for a newspaper. You can find sites out there like the Blog Directories which you can submit your blog feed or RSS to. If you do this they'll pick up your headlines and people can then dig through them for interesting blogs. The best part about these feed systems is that most continue to check your blog for updates so once you've submitted it you can just reap the benefits!

#5 Blog Often and When Appropriate

One mistake some people make with blogging is blogging when they have nothing useful to say just to get another "post" on their blog. If you are doing this then you are going to have a hard time making fans who are interested in saving your page in their favorites or bookmarks. However, you want to often update your blog. If you don't post regularly then you'll bore your fans. Blog often, but make sure you're blogging something of interest.

#6 Make Sure Your Blog Has a Theme

If you're blog is all over the place you'll have a hard time putting together a fan base. You may get a few hits here and there by random people but you want to build a community. To do that you'll probably want to pick a few categories you're going to post about and stick with them. If you are the type who likes to make random posts sometimes you could just make a category called Random Thoughts or something along those lines but again be careful.

#7 Pingbacks and Trackbacks

If you want people to visit your blog then visit other blogs that are related to yours and get involved. You'll find that people often leave comments with links back to their own blog or another related blog in the comments. These are part of the pingback/trackback system which can be a lot of fun and also get you a lot of additional traffic. Avoid spamming though as you'll just irritate potential friends and you'll likely have your comments removed and lose your comment ability.

#8 Appearance Matters

Every blog service offers templates which can make your blog look unique or have a style you feel fits. Often you can also customize your blog with custom graphics and tinker with the layout. While this can really help your blog be careful that you aren't making it irritating to potential readers. Not many people want to come to a blog that hurts their eyes to look at or which has loud music they don't like.

There you go, 8 simple tips on how to increase your blog traffic. The last thing to remember is that building up your blog traffic is going to take time. Depending on the potential number of people interested in your topics and your other blogging related skills it could take weeks and even more likely months to really get things going. If you blog it, they will come!

How to Write a Better About Page For Your Business Blog

By Denise Wakeman

The "About" Page, also known as your bio page, is one of the most visited pages on a blog. Readers want to know the author of a blog: their story and why they are blogging. Yet most business bloggers are missing this opportunity to connect with readers. Many blog authors write about their education and job history in a dry manner.

Your 'About' page should be written appropriately for your blog - not copied from a professional bio or CV where you talk about yourself in the third person.

Remember a blog is a conversation, more like writing an email to your favorite client. The more you can connect with readers by using the "I" and "you" pronouns, the more it will feel and read like a conversation.

More importantly, rather than delivering your past experiences and education, your about page is an opportunity to connect with readers on an emotionally profound level.

  • What's your story?
  • Why did you decide to start a blog?
  • Why are you passionate about your niche?
  • What were the pivotal moments in your life and work that led you to where you are now?

People want authentic stories. They want to know who the person is talking to them through the blog. Why should they care what you have to say? What makes you the expert? Why should they believe anything you say?

Tell readers about the challenges you've faced and how you've overcome them. Be real with readers. When you are transparent, you become someone readers can relate to; readers will begin to connect and see more than words written on a web page.

Your business blog is more than a brochure or a marketing tool. It's an opportunity to establish intimacy with readers who are searching for inspiration and solutions to their problems. People do business with people, not companies. It's up to you to breath life into your blog and the "About" page is the place to start.

How to Have a Poorly Branded Blog... And How to Fix It

By Denise Wakeman

In a tour around the blogosphere looking for excellent business blogs, it's not uncommon to observe a variety of conditions that reflect poorly on the state of business blogging.

  • Many business blogs are languishing

  • Some haven't been posted on in weeks or months

  • Some are all over the map with their content

And it gets worse! One of the most common mistakes being committed is little attention to branding for the business.

What does that mean?

When visitors land on your blog, in a blink of the eye, they should know:

  • Who the blog is for

  • What the blog is about

  • Why they should stick around and read your content

  • Why they should subscribe

  • Who you are and why they should believe what you have to say

Without following best practices that address these points, a blog is confusing and ineffective. It will not reflect well on you professionally; it will not work to build your list of prospects and most likely will not convert readers to clients.

These common mistakes are on blogs written by intelligent professionals who are very good at what they do, in their fields. They just haven't understood and mastered business blogging yet. Perhaps you might be experiencing a few of these problems on your own blog as well. If that's the case, you aren't alone. These are actually quite common challenges.

Your blog must pass the "blink" test: It must be immediately recognizable and memorable.

Branding goes beyond finding a clever name, though that is critical as well. Along with a clearly defined core message, there are a few elements must be in place for you to create a well-branded blog that attracts massive visibility:

A descriptive name - if you're starting your blog, are you branding YOU, your business, your book? Know the purpose of your blog so you can name it appropriately.

Tagline - who is the blog for? What are the benefits for your readers? Who you are, your name and your expertise

A customized banner - ties in with your brand, your website, logo, brand colors; it extends the look and feel that represents you and your values

Your photo and bio page - These two items should be a good representation of you as a professional.

Once you have established the name and brand for your blog, then it's easier to stay focused and build visibility with a consistent image of your business throughout the blogosphere.

Can Any Online Business Have a Blog?

By Alex Cleanthous

Online businesses are very creative at finding new ways to connect with their customers. They should be too, because it's a highly competitive market and the money and the orders go to the businesses that make the best impression overall.

Connecting with their customers is an important way of building a relationship that will hopefully last into the long term and generate a lot of profits in the process. Many companies use blogging to help them build that relationship, although some people question whether it is a suitable medium for all businesses to use.

So what is the answer? Are there certain business sectors that wouldn't benefit from having a blog to enhance their internet marketing efforts?

In truth it's hard to think of a business sector that falls into this category; the question is more a case of what type of blog they are going to have than whether they should have one or not. The benefits of a business blog are too many and numerous to ignore.

So it's clearly the style and tone here that matters. A fun innovative company that sells toys and gadgets for all ages wouldn't choose to set up a blog that was serious and official in nature, because it wouldn't suit them. Instead they would create plans to build a blog that represented their business to the best of their ability. This would help to reinforce the purpose of the website and mark them out as a company that was fun and innovative in every way.

In contrast there are many more companies that are more serious in their outlook. These will often use a blog which reinforces that stance and shows their customers how they approach their business.

Of course the content of any blog is also very important. Depending on the approach a business uses, you will notice the types of blog entry will vary greatly. The fun gadget company may invite a lot of participation from their customers to get them involved; they may also ask for ideas for future products or perhaps even ask customers for their stories and reactions to products they have already bought. Some businesses have used this to great effect.

A business blog that has a more serious tone may be approached very differently though. It will often have a more stand offish viewpoint that simply tells the customers and clients what is going on, rather than inviting them to take an active part in the blog.

Not every online business has a blog, but more and more of them are recognizing the benefits of creating one and using it for online marketing among other things. Business blogging may be very different from personal blogs - and indeed you can hold up two business blogs next to each other and not see too many similarities between them - but they all have the same intention in the end, and that is to get the attention that their customers will notice and that will drive their business forward.

Using blogs to market your online business has its advantages -- and here are some of them.

1. Zero Cost

Blog sites are free! That's right; you can easily set one up in a hurry without needing to pay for its services. This is a cheaper alternative to purchasing another domain to help market your venture or to pay for additional pages to be added to your main website.

2. No Need For Web Programming

Affiliate marketers need not waste their time with HTML programming or hard coding just to create a site. Blogs are created with just a few clicks to disable and enable features, as well as the existence of text boxes to populate the content with meaningful posts. All you need to do is to click the right button to publish all of it online. Very easy!

3. Interact With Your Visitors

One advantage of using blogs for your affiliate marketing business is the direct interaction with your potential customers and visitors. Keep in mind that individuals who read your posts can give comments -- either good or bad; you can reply to these comments to further improve your relationship with them or give a professional reply to a negative post that is advantageous for your online reputation.

Successful Blogging - 3 Types of Blogging Optimization

By Robert Deveau

How can I make a blog and have it be read and be financially successful, is a question that I hear all the time. I have come up with three things to consider to make your blog the best that it can be. Make your blog both personally satisfying and financially successful.

Reader optimization: There is another expression that you need to be aware of, that is the word "Stickiness". Stickiness is what makes a visitor want to come back to you. The best way to achieve that is to make sure that your blog does not look like everyone else's. Unfortunately, working with Blogger will not be enough in this area, you will require a wordpress blog. Wordpress will require just a little extra bit of know how but will be well worth it in the long run.

Search engine optimization: Without visitors, you are completely out of business. Most of the search engines have many criteria for how sites are ranked but only a couple that really matter. The first one is your keywords. Another word that you need to know is "long-tail keywords". In other words, if you go to Google and type in the word "Cruise" you will get millions of results. However, if you type in the words "what to expect on a cruise" in quotation marks, you get fewer than 2000 results. That is the keyword that you want to target.

Financial Optimization: Otherwise known as monetization. There are two ways to monetize your blog that most people use. One is pay-per-click ads. No don't worry, you will not be paying for the clicks, you will be paid for the clicks. The other is affiliate products. An affiliate product is simply where you put someone else's product on your site and you are paid a percentage for every sale that goes through your site.

Increasing Traffic to Your Blog

By Robert Bassett

Blogging - Use Your Blog to Market Yourself Online

How to increase traffic to your blog? Word of mouth is one of the most important things to consider. Do your part by making sure your friends and associates are viewing it and that they are telling their friends to view it. It sounds simple but a personal testimony about something is always better than impersonal advertisements. Here are some very important points to consider....

1. To start a blog, this is a good site- www.blogger.com or use Facebook or Myspace. There are other sites that you can search for starting a blog, but this is a good start.

2. That being said don't overlook an opportunity to promote your blog. Mention your blog on everything you send out to someone and put a link address on what you send so they can access it easily. Email regular mail etc. mention your web blog.

3. There are plenty of sites on the web that will help drive traffic to your site, some are free. Check with others online who have used those sites to make sure they actually work.

4. If you were really serious about promoting your blog you could pay a web marketing company to promote it for you or for consulting on how to do it yourself but that is expensive and is really more for those who have an online business.

5. Also if you haven't already done so submit your site to the major search engines.

There are in fact two main kinds of blogs being used to drive massive traffic in the direction of various websites. The first is the sort of blog that is closely related to the subject of the site it links to. The other type of blog will tend to have a popular topic with little or no relation to the website topic. Here the idea is to attract huge volumes of traffic and then direct as much of it as possible to the website using attractive and catchy headlines on links situated at the blog.

Both types of blogs work pretty well and what's more, there is nothing to stop an online marketer from using both types of blogs at the same time to win and direct even heavier traffic in the direction of their website. The fact that blogs are easy to maintain makes it simpler for virtually any small business to have several blogs successfully running alongside their main website.

All you have to do with blogs covering unrelated topics to the site you want to direct traffic to, is to be careful to ensure that it atracts the kind of people who qualify as prospects for your site. For instance, it will not help if your main site focuses on a product for women and yet your popular blog attracts mostly men and very few ladies. This is niche marketing.

Blog Keywords - How to Find and Use Keywords in Blog Posts

By Melanie Dejonge

Almost everyone I know has a blog, even if it's only blog posts that they make on their Myspace page. A lot of people have something to say, and they find putting their thoughts down on virtual paper via a blog to be a great way to do it. And it is. First of all, there's an electronic record of your thoughts that you can look back on in the future, and, even more appealing in many circumstances, blogs are made in such a way that other people can easily find the material you've written.

On MySpace or other Social Network and Social Blogging platforms, that can be as simple as putting a status update or a bulletin out to your friends and letting them know you've put up a new blog post.

If you want to take your blogging to the next level, however, you will want to go beyond having a blog that your friends and family read, and write posts that are geared to get your content into the search engines.

This is where many people lose the thread. They aren't clear about how to do this.

It's actually fairly simple.

The first part consists of finding the right phrase, or "keyword," to write about. There are many ways to go about this, but here is what I think is the simplest and most effective. First, think of a broad idea you want to write about. If you keep a fitness blog, maybe that broad idea is "eating healthy." Next, plug that idea into a keyword research tool. There are thousands of these, of both the free and paid variety, all across the web. My favorite free tool is the good old Google AdWords external keyword tool. I figure, if I'm trying to rank in Google, why not get my information directly from them?

After the keyword tool processes your query, you will have a list of more specific phrases, as well as the search volume for those phrases. You will look for phrases that get medium to heavy searches and research those further.

The next step involves Google itself. When you see a phrase you're interested in, type it into Google inside quotation marks. This will tell you the amount of pages already in the search engines which have those exact words in that exact order. Those pages are your real competition.

When you have located a phrase that has medium to heavy search traffic and medium to low competition, you are ready to write your blog post!

When you write your post, make sure you use the phrase in the title of the post, and make sure your permalink structure is set up so that the link to the post includes the title. Use the phrase in the first sentence of your post, and the last. Try to use it once or twice in the main content of the article, as well, but don't push it if it's not natural. You don't want your writing to sound stilted.

Of course, this is a very simplified and basic tutorial in keywords research. For more in-depth information on professional blogging, check out http://MelaniedeJonge.com

Will Your Blog Fail?

By Marian Krajcovic

There are good reasons to start a blog. You can be seen as an expert in your niche, you can let people know what's going on in your business, you can sell affiliate products with product reviews, and you can make money with your own products or with AdSense ads. But before you go ahead and start a blog, think first about why some blogs fail. If you keep these failings in mind before you begin, you can do what you need to do to make sure you don't fall into the same traps.

If you are already an expert in your field, that's great. If you're not, then it's going to be a lot harder to compete in a niche that is already dominated by experts. You'll have to work at building your credibility first before you can compete with the big boys.

But having said that, you can narrow your niche and specialize in your unique offerings. Just don't make the niche too narrow that you run out of stuff to blog about. Also, make sure there are people interested in your chosen niche topic. You need an audience of a lot more than one.

Another issue that can lead to failing is when people decide to have lots of blogs. That's not a problem by itself and can indeed make you good money, but you need to get one blog up and running smoothly and earning an income before you put the next one up. You need to develop a successful plan with the first blog so you can implement that plan with your next blogs.

I see some blogs failing because the owners are just in it for the money. You can tell they have no interest in the blog subject, they use PLR without bothering to rewrite it, and the blog is covered from head to toe with ads. Don't waste your time if you're not committed.

When you have a blog, you need to brand yourself - both with your logo and what your blog is about. What is your blog about exactly? If a new reader can't figure that out, they probably won't stick around. Stay within your blog subject and dive in deep. Readers interested in the subject will come back again and again.

Some blogs could have made it if their owners had just taken some time to analyze what was working and what wasn't. If you spend any time on successful blogs, you will see that they are constantly evolving. Staying stagnant = failure.

To be successful with your blog you need to market it to the right audience. Pick the right keywords when you do PPC and advertise on websites in the same or complimentary niches. Find a forum in your niche and become a contributor with quality posts.

Lastly, don't expect to get rich over night from your blog. It takes time to build up an audience that trusts what you have to say. Keep at it and consider the reasons why blogs fail. Successful blogging can be yours.

Tips For Writing a Popular Post

By Marian Krajcovic

In the beginning, when you first start blogging, you feel like you're blogging to yourself. You even get your mom and brother to leave comments so it looks like you have people reading your blog. Eventually, you start getting real feedback, but it's sporadic and lukewarm at best. You dream of writing a popular post that will not only make you feel good, but will get you a boat load of traffic - eyeballs looking at your blog and seeing what you're selling.

Creating a popular post for your blog is like showing up at a potluck with the best tasting dish around. Everyone loves your casserole, it's better than everyone else's casserole, people ask you for the recipe, you're seen as a successful cook, and they all want to invite you to their own potlucks. Word of your success travels and opportunities open up before you in ways you never dreamed of.

That's what a popular post can do. People will bookmark your site because of the wow factor of the post, many will comment on your blog, others will blog about it, quite a few will Digg it, you'll see a flood of unique traffic, your RSS subscribes and opt-ins will soar, and the monetizing strategies you have in place will start doing their thing.

So here's what you do:

Write a catchy, witty, attention-grabbing headline. If your title doesn't get their attention, they won't read your post. It's as straightforward as that.

Have a great first paragraph. This is make it or break it for most readers. If it's full of fluff, they're not going to want to read the rest of your piece. This is where you tell them what you're going to tell them and why they need to hear it (what's in it for them.)

You are probably not going to write all of your posts to be popular posts, but when you are aiming to write a grand piece, take your time writing it. Don't rush. Think about it, write it, put it aside, come back and polish it till it shines. Keep your eye out for grammar and spelling errors.

The posts that become popular are the ones that give people what they really, really want to know. So help people, no major strings attached. Give them hot new info, not rehashed ho-hum they can find easily and everywhere. Give them more than they are expecting. Don't be afraid to add some of your own personality or use a personal example when illustrating a point. Also, while you're being so helpful, offer other resources and links in your post.

Linking to other info in your post also has the added benefit of the sites you linked to returning the favor. They could give their blog readers or list subscribers a heads up about your article or even permanently link to it in their sidebar.

Keep your formatting pleasing to the eye. Have a picture, use bullets or numbers, bold subheadings, and break up your paragraphs into smaller chunks.

If you want your readers to rate your post or Digg it - ask them to. If you had them at "hello", then they'll be happy to comply with your request.

There's certainly no guarantee your post will become popular, but in order to stand a chance you should take a little extra time and thought and write it like a post you would really want to read.

Does Trying to Make Money With a Microblog Mean That You Automatically Lose Your Independence?

By John Parks

Most people who start microblogs do so because they're just interested in talking about something. Whether it's their daily life, the goings-on of their town and surroundings, or their favorite hobby, microblogging is becoming the most popular way for people to get specific on the internet.

The thing is, though, microblogging takes time, and unless you're using a free host, it costs money too. Bandwidth continues to get cheaper every year, but with the advent of online videos, flash games, and other high-bandwidth objects cut into this. Additionally, all of the effort involved in microblogging makes it feel like a job, so why shouldn't you earn more than just praise and attention? You deserve a little money, right?

The thing is, when you decide that you want to make money with your microblog, you threaten to lose your independence. You will first have to make space for ads, which detracts from your own subject matter. Additionally, many advertising services do not inform you as to what ads will be shown on your website beforehand, meaning that the ads may be inappropriate for your demographic or content. After all, if you're microblogging about a local sports team, you're not going to win a lot of points with your visitors if an ad promoting the rival team is at the top of your blog! Also, many ads are just downright distracting, and are seen as a "cop out" by visitors. This is especially true if you've been getting by without ads for quite some time.

There are several ways to deal with this. One is to simply refuse to accept ads, and fiercely defend your independence even though it will cost you money. It's not an easy option, but if you've already got a good paying job and your bandwidth costs aren't too high, it may be the best one. A second is to offer premium services to those who are willing to pay more. Premium services (such as special articles or other content) are a great way to bring in money without giving in to "the man," and are much more effective than begging for donations. A third way is to offer ads, but to check them out first. There are many advertising networks out there now which offer very carefully tailored ads which will mirror or at least try to go along with the content of the website, and even try to not get in the way of the actual content.

In any event, it's up to you to find what works best for you, and how much (if any) of your independence you're willing to give up in exchange for a little cash. It is your blog after all, and most bloggers find that they can get by with few ads or no ads, especially if they are microblogging and thus have an inherently small audience. After all, one of the advantages of microblogging is that your small audience gives you the freedom to work with them and give them the information they require in order to make smart decisions, or just be entertained. Why compromise that by jamming in ads?
