This might seem a bit trivial but I see this often since I use forums as part of my marketing mix. The question is how do you get people to pay attention to you once you get to the forum? There are six things that I would be concerned about when scoping out the forums. Here are the steps that I use to get traffic from forums.
1) Get your keywords formalized. It is important to have a collection of keywords that fit your niche. If you don't use Pay Per Click advertising you still need to collect at least 50 quality keywords for your niche. The point of focusing on your keywords is to tie your website to the chosen keywords.
2) Your choice of responses must work to your advantage and to do that you must consciously optimize your responses and input to match your website keywords. If you sell soft sculpture toys, your niche keywords might be perhaps toys and perhaps teddy bears or other soft toys. Your input and responses should include some of your keywords in order to bolster your back links to your website.
3) If you create articles or have a blog of your own, you can reference them in your responses on the forums. Let's say that you flagged a question on care and packaging or soft toys. You have a great answer to the post; so you compose an answer and reference your blog post from last year. You hyperlink the blog post line and ensure that you have a few keywords from your blog in the post. So you would write something like this: "I know how tough it is to store and ship soft toys I wrote a blog post on it at my blog - (blog name). This is solution to the problem is (fill in the blank).
4) There is a certain trick to using forums for marketing purposes. You should carefully craft your bio or your signature section to promote your squeeze page or blog. Once again you should make certain that your keywords are injected in your signature. If you are selling the soft toys at softhuggybears.com, you might have a signature that says "How to take good care of your soft huggy bears. Get my FREE report at softhuggybears.com." make the case for your solution to their problem.
5) Keep the conversation on topic and move it along with your responses. Once you reply to the original post, send another post to add a twist to the conversation and perhaps pose a follow up question for the other members to respond to. That keeps the thread open and more people will read it. More people reading the thread means more people involved in the conversation and seeing your signature.
6) If the forum has an article section, contribute to that section as often as you can. Take a few of your blog posts and reconfigure them into articles. You'll need to reach a lot of forums to make this pay off. Don't stop at one or two forums and expect the get a flood of traffic. This is a business venture and must be treated as such.
This is a great way to get back links and build your reputation as well more traffic to your website. Be sure to get your facts straight when posting and stay honest. People will hold you accountable when you are solving their problems.
