Want to build a profitable writing career? You can, when you take the blogging fast-track. Discover how in this article.
Let's start by defining "blog." A blog has often been called an "online journal," which is very misleading. Essentially, a blog is an instant publishing tool, which anyone can use to get their message out across the globe within minutes, via RSS.
OK, another definition - "RSS" means "Really Simple Syndication". All bogs offer RSS feeds, which not only make it easy to subscribe to a blog by clicking the big orange broadcast button, but which also mean that your blog's content is collected by RSS aggregators and syndicated (broadcast) across the Web.
Your First Blog - Just Start Writing
When I recommend blogging, some writers ask me "but what should I blog ABOUT?"
You can blog about anything at all. Blog about your writing career, your dog, your kids, politics, a favorite topic... Just blog whatever's on your mind at the moment.
Don't over-think this. Every day is a new day, and each day you know more about yourself, your writing and the world than you did the day before, so just start writing.
All your writing is a process of discovery, so all writing you do is valuable: your writing teaches you.
How Your Blog Will Build Your Writing Career
I love blogs because blogs open you to the world, and the world talks back.
One writer I know (who shall remain nameless) whined on her blog about the lack of response she got when sending queries to a particular mass market magazine. Now, the lack of response to a query can mean either "forget it!" or that the magazine editor didn't receive your submission.
It turned out that the editor had a Google Alert for the magazine's name, and the writer's blog post popped up in her email Inbox. Indeed, she hadn't received the submission, and she contacted the writer via the writer's blog.
(Tip - this is not the way to win friends and influence them in magazine writing, so resend your submissions BEFORE you complain.)
Another writer blogged about the woeful pay rates at outsourcing sites, and suddenly found herself with several new clients who needed her skills, and paid very well indeed.
Many writers have blogged about their books on their blogs, and have won publishing contracts, so blogging is a great way to get of the slush pile at publishing houses. Writing a great blog can also win you an agent, who may be looking for a writer to write a specific book.
Your blog can fast-track your writing career in many ways, because people are looking for writers, and more and more they look for them on the Web. If you're not blogging, you're missing out on opportunities.
