A simple way to get more visitors to your web site or blog is by commenting on other blogs. Best of all, if you choose the blogs on which you comment wisely, the people who come to your site will be looking for exactly what you offer. Here are some tips on developing a blog commenting strategy that will bring you the best results.
Find the Right Blogs
Start by locating blogs in your niche. You probably already know of some, but you can locate more by doing searches for your keywords at Technorati.com and Blogsearch.Google.com. When you find these blogs, subscribe to their RSS feeds so that you will be notified when there are new posts.
Get Google to notify you when they find a post on your topic by setting up Google Alerts for your keywords. You can take advantage of this free service at Google.com/alerts. Don't forget to add these blogs to your RSS feed reader, too.
By looking for blogs that target the same types of readers as your site, you can find people who will want to read what you have to say. They will be more likely to visit your site, subscribe to your updates, and come back again and again.
To get the most traffic from your comments, look for blogs that get the most traffic. You can get some idea of a blog's popularity from their Alexa.com ranking or Technorati authority. However, even a blog that does not receive a lot of traffic can be a good place for you to comment if their visitors are part of your target market, so don't automatically exclude smaller or newer blogs.
Write Good Comments
Once you have found the blogs with audiences like yours, watch for posts where you can add to the conversation with a comment. Your comment should enhance and expand on the post. Elaborate on something the blogger wrote, or suggest a point he overlooked. Never write a comment that is nothing more than, "Great post, do0d!!!!" That is just spam.
It is acceptable to disagree with the blogger in your comment, but do so politely. No flaming or name calling, please. Blogs are conversations, not shouting matches.
Link Wisely and Sparingly
Most blogs will link your name to the URL you provide. If you say something interesting, many readers will click through the link to visit your site, so put thought into your comments.
Some blogs will allow you to include a link within your post, but only do so if it adds something to your comment. For example, if you have a useful resource on your site related to the topic of the post, you may mention it and link to it in your comment.
The links you receive from blog comments may be "no follow" links. That means that the blog is telling the search engines not to give credit for that link; however, there are people who believe that the search engines may count even no follow links when determining search engine rank.
Some bloggers make it a point to remove the "no follow" tag and give full link credit. If you want to concentrate on placing comments on these blogs, you can locate many of them by doing a search for "do follow blogs" on Google or other search engines. Whether they help with your search engine rankings or not, blog comment links have value because they can directly deliver visitors to your site.
Do It Now!
Make it a point to comment on one or more blogs every day. Then, watch your web stats to see how many new visitors discover your site.
